General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsYou know what will be fun about the post-Trump GOP?
George W. Bush is unmentionable. No Republican wants to talk about him. Nobody wants to remind voters that he existed.
All this stolen election, Afghanistan, Iraq, war-crimes, torture, another dubious election, economic-crisis... Let's not talk about that.
And Trump? Do you think the Republicans will want to talk about Trump?
A dubious election, attacks on the press, racist dog-whistles, insulting and trash-talking the US-government, blatant corruption, exploding the deficit, weakening trade, weakening the international alliances of the US, sex-scandals, multiple aides sent to jail, shocking unpresidential behavior...
"It's time to look forward! The GOP is a born-again party with all-new and fresh ideas! You-know-who and you-know-who never existed!"

(46,150 posts)Like Hitler and the Third Reich.
I went to Germany in 1979 and 1989. The first time, I was invited to a Jaeger "picnic" in the middle of the woods. Mostly men, hunters. Good food, good times. Until the men started singing (in German) songs about the good ole days during the Third Reich. With gusto. The second time, I was taken to a cellar in a residence where there was a virtual Hitler museum. Medallions with Hitler's head on them, daggers with "Gott Mit Uns" (God is with us). Under glass.
Obviously these two events were not universally accepted and there will be pockets of Germans who will talk about past good times when Hitler and his gang were in charge. They won't acknowledge the death and destruction. They feel good about themselves and about Germany when they offer posthumous support for a psycho-leader.
And likewise, there will be pockets of Trump supporters who won't and/or can't wake up. He's their guy.

(6,375 posts)All of us looking around post-Trump and saying "GOP - where'd they go? They used to be a political party in this country and they seem to have vanished".
Now THAT would be fun.

(15,242 posts)They like who they are and will not go back in the tube. I know many Republicans who are still as mad as hell about Nixon. Republicans may stare at your ass but they have no hindsight.

(22,976 posts)Post-Trump (hopefully, we all get there, and soon), Republicans will have ZERO claim on their pretenses of morality, family values, belief in laws, belief in our system of justice, the practice of fiscal responsibility, belief in the Constitution, etc., etc.
They've pulled out all the stops, and have strayed completely from their old moorings. They have nothing to add to the national conversation anymore.

(12,344 posts)Trump has shown how to activate them. There will be another Trump, only smarter. He won't make the same stupid mistakes that Trump did. And therefore he will be much more dangerous.
I hope we can prevent this is by governing well.

(3,168 posts)One way they will try to get out of this is that they will claim that Trump was "never a real conservative." They'll cite that he was a registered Democrat in the past, and that he even (horrors) supported HILLARY for Senate in NY. Believe me, they will try to blame it on Trump secretly being a librul. They will never take responsibility for him. It will be up to us to NOT let them do that!
