(7,650 posts)election-stealing apparati. A lot of $$ has been laundered this way as well.
Kudos to the people who took action to put a stop to the corrupt poll closings.
On edit: hopefully people will take action against the massive poll closing/poll consolidations going on all over the country

(2,169 posts)He was fired because people found out. The election officials will still keep trying to disenfranchise voters.

(24,372 posts)Republicans KNOW that if elections were completely free, open and easy to access for everyone who was eligible to vote, they wouldnt stand a chance of being in power in most places
So they cheat.
And theyre good at it

(82,849 posts)They've worked the system for decades to get here, and they'll keep working it. The good news is that people are tuned in to some of their shenanigans, and they're no longer getting a free run. They're going to have to be sneakier about it. I'm confident they can do that, so we have to remain vigilant.

(238 posts)I'm one of two Democrats on the three-member Electoral Board of a rural, heavily Republican Virginia county. We are required every 5 years to do a detailed ADA survey of our polling places to ensure they are handicapped accessible.
Previous Electoral Boards had let it slide. Three years ago, our Republican board chair said we are going to do this right and do it thoroughly. We found four of our six polling places were not in compliance with the ADA -- no handicapped parking spaces, narrow entrances, non-compliant wheelchair ramp.
The Republican board chair said we are going to fix this . . . and fix it we did. It's a long story but all our polling places now are ADA-compliant.
The difference is that our Republican chair is an honest lady who takes no shit off the county Republican chair, who is a flaming asshole.
Just fix the polling places, do what it takes. Of course, these people don't want to make it easy for minorities to vote.

(9,669 posts)Small steps, yes but enough of them can turn to a stampede. Some exposure, transparency and light.
Nice learning experience for those who want to keep pulling this crap, too. If they can learn from it.

(61,695 posts)GOP is notorious for having a scapegoat and distraction, then a waiting period, and they'll close down 6 of the 9 voting precincts.
Vigilance!

(4,437 posts)Yes, they fired the guy. But the story does not say they are going to keep all nine locations open!
They STILL may be closing them.
Dont take a victory lap until after we are assured the polling locations will be open!

(17,988 posts)After filing lawsuits for 8 years, firing democratic Election officials. He lost every case, the 2 officials got their jobs back, but refused to work with Husted.
Finally this year he found a judge that would allow him to purge voters.
Mike DeWine and Jon Husted are on the ticket.
Mike let Charter schools rip off millions. Just this week he sued ECOT, the biggest scandal in Ohio.
Mike never did solve the Southern Ohio massacre. In front of the cameras for weeks. The Press left,so did Mike!

(182 posts)Gerald Greene the state representative over Randolph County was shot in the leg behind a sex store in Columbus Ga. He called the police from a liquor store nearby and said he was shot in the parking lot. Video later surfaced of him coming from behind the sex shop. The sex shop said he was a regular customer. He has a democratic opponent who has an excellent chance of beating him so the republicans are doing all they can to suppress the black vote in his district.

(5,995 posts)C'mon, everybody parks behind the sex/porno shop and strip club 100 yards away because they don't want people to see them at the liquor store buying Lotto tickets. Especially when it's 5 miles out of your way and every convenience store sells Lotto.

(5,995 posts)He said that the consultant claimed the GA Sec'y of State had sent out guidance about closing for ADA compliance. The Sec'y of State is the GOP candidate for Governor and is not supposed to have jurisdiction over local election boards.
Also, the two polling locations proposed had one on the "White" side of town and the other on the "black" side. Wonder where the majority of the rural folks would have been assigned?
Sounds like the ACLU and others have caught this in time. Have to wonder how many other places are doing similar things that are going unreported?
This is in the same vein of Alabama's attempts to close the DMV offices in numerous black majority counties. If it's harder to get a proper id, it's even harder to get to cast a ballot.
And that's what I like about the South
