I'm not...that moment when he corrected that lady about Obama, I forgave him of much

(1,058 posts)I respect the man for his service in Vietman.
As a Vietnam Veteran, I will not trash, nor disrespect a fellow Vietnam Veteran.

(7,286 posts)Them good old boys did not like his adopted daughter. Something about the color of her skin

(35,363 posts)McCain in the primary back in 2008 and probably would have in the general if he hadn't picked Palin.

(7,638 posts)I must be reading your post wrong. You voted for McCain in the 2008 primary?

(35,363 posts)I lost all respect for him politically. I supported Clinton to the very end and reluctantly voted for Obama in
the general.

(1,077 posts)Anyone who diminishes John should rot in hell. The Gentleman has endured more than we can ever imagine. He gave up his family connection with CinCPAC and remained POW until those ahead of him came home.
May anyone who is disgusted, STFU.
Service to country supercedes political divides. Those who've not served wouldn't understand!

(16,091 posts)I personally just never really liked the man...his own history shows he was a legacy and received special consideration because of who his father and grandfather were!
He graduated 894 in a class of 899, he was always at odds with superiors and violated regulations that would have resulted in any other midshipman being kicked out of the Academy!
With his grades he didn't deserve to be a fighter pilot, he was more qualified to be the laundry officer on a supply ship, but it was his name that got him into flight school!
And let's not forget his involvement with the Lincoln Savings and Loan as one of the Keating Five...in which McCain and Senator John Glenn were both admonished for showing "poor judgement"!!!
Speaking of poor judgement, let's not forget his selection of Sara Palin as his VP, therefore allowing the half term governor to become a permanent fixture in conservative circles and a constant source of stupidity!!!
Out of everything he's done the Sara Palin choice will forever show that the maverick had become a gelding!!!

(42,766 posts)McCain and I were both stationed in Meridian, Miss. in the mid 1960s. I don't recall ever speaking with him. He was attached to one training squadron, I in another. I did however speak with his father about two years later in Rota, Spain. He seemed like a likable sort for an Admiral. I will bear no hard feelings against Sen.John McCain. He is a survivor of the Hanoi Hilton and he earned the right to leave us as quietly and with as much dignity as possible.

(11,108 posts)However, he honorably served and deserves respect.
Like all of us he was flawed. He had really good days and really bad days.
He deserves to be allowed to die in peace with as much comfort as can be provided to him and his family.

(36,827 posts)He endured quite a bit as a POW and for that he deserves credit, but virtually everything else about his military career was less than honorable.

(66,446 posts)He endured torture, and refused repatriation until all of his comrades could come with him. That's stand-up behavior.
He's done a lot of rotten things. But then, so have I...

(58,698 posts)I disagreed with him on a lot of things, but the man had his own brand of integrity.
I certainly won't join in the current piling on that some feel is justified. Once his body cools, perhaps I'll voice some of my criticisms, but not now. And frankly, my criticisms of him are pretty much all in the political realm, not the personal.

(9,733 posts)He's a fellow Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war. I hope his final days are peaceful and pain-free.

(7,300 posts)Like most people, he's a mixed bag. I respect his and his family's (They serve, too) life time of service to the country. I disrespect his hypocrisy in his efforts to curtail "entitlements" while his very existence was tax payer funded from cradle to grave.
I can disagree with a person without hate. May he pass on with a minimum of discomfort and pain and I hope for peace of mind for his family.

(2,615 posts)alongside carrier based A4 pilots, you won't find a braver group of people.
Any fool can land on a mile of runway. Try landing a jet in less than 500 feet
during a rainstorm, at night, on a moving flight deck. More than a few died trying.
The outpouring of hate towards McCain while he lays dying is the ugliest thing
I have seen on DU since it opened.

(4,146 posts)But he was never the maverick politician he claimed to be and he never took responsibility for the huge error in judgement that he made in putting Sarah Palin on his ticket to be VP. His seriousness was always questionable after that. He may have partially redeemed himself by being the deciding vote against Obama are repeal.
