I would most gladly honor any soldier or citizen who fought for our country under the Rotunda or anywhere else in our great nation.

(67,817 posts)Do you have any clue about how disgusting your sentiment sounds?
Do you have ANY clue about how honorable this man was when a POW? For that alone, he deserves it and for that is why I am saying what I said in the OP.

(6,709 posts)If McCain deserves it "for that alone" there should be others. And imo he doesn't.

"...his wounds were attended to only after the North Vietnamese discovered that his father was a Navy admiral. What has never been disclosed is the manner in which they found out: McCain told them."
<snip>
It was hard not to see how pleased the Vietnamese were to have captured an admirals son, he writes, and I knew that my fathers identity was directly related to my survival.

"...He could have come home, but keeping faith with his fellow POWs, he chose to remain imprisoned in Hanoi.
What McCain glosses over is that accepting early release would have required him to make disloyal statements that would have violated the militarys Code of Conduct. If he had done so, he could have risked court-martial and an ignominious end to his military career. "

His cellmate has nothing but the highest praise on how he conducted himself.
John McCain is a hero, despite what you say and the majority of the country, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, agree.

(29,675 posts)For all POWs. Maybe including in some way names, images, etc of other POWs,especially those who never made it back. I think he would be ok with it.
I disagreed with him on many things but I can respect him in that role: a very public POW whom the public can put a face on.

He's a fraud. Staying silent during the Swift boating of Kerry when he fucking knew better is just one example of why he doesn't deserve this honor.

(33,606 posts)and think his Senate record is not a good one.
That said, he is a long time Senator who served without real scandal, as well as his military service makes him deserve this as much as any other.

(2,959 posts)He and my two other uncles who were in Japanese and German prison camps had the same opinion of McCain's use of his POW status. I agree with them
Two of those great uncles lived with my family while they were dying of cancer, moving into VA facilities in the final stages. I've seen that first hand and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, even with the way more powerful drugs available these days.
Trump is an able politician who hired very good PR people to make his worst actions smell better, Keating 5, his military record etc.
That's about it as far as I can tell.
Of course he is exponentially more honorable, dignified, and decent that the current crop of republican pols.
Unless they ship the body east to be buried in Arlington he should lay in state for his former constituents in AZ.

(4,627 posts)Ill never forget, during his Presidential run in 2008, when he took the mic away from a bigoted, racist woman ranting about Obama. He took the mic out of her hands and said no, no and added something like hes an honorable man.
Ill also never forget his dramatic thumbs down in front of traitor McConnell during the healthcare vote.
These, and other things, are there for us to honor in him. Yes, hes Republican, so honor doesnt go very far these days, but McCain is old school.
