(667 posts)have no idea, for the google challenged among us a brief outline of who it was named for.
Richard Russell, Democrat from Georgia, served in the U.S. Senate for almost 40 years (1932-1971). During World War II Russell chaired a special committee, traveling extensively to observe the quality and effectiveness of war material under combat conditions. He chaired the Armed Services Committee during two major wars, from 1951 to 1953, and from 1955 to 1969, and was instrumental in boosting the defense budget. He authored the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act and promoted the development of new forms of energy. Russell became known as a senators senator due to his mastery of Senate rules and procedures. As the leader of the Senates southern bloc, Russell often used his parliamentary skills to oppose civil rights legislation, including bills to ban lynching and to abolish the poll tax. In 1956 he co-authored the Southern Manifesto to oppose racial desegregation, and he led southern senators in their opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Respect for Russells legislative skills, even among his opponents, led to the Russell Senate Office Building being named in his honor in 1972.

(10,272 posts)McConnell is as good as running the Senate as Pelosi is at running the House. And that means he is NEVER to be under-estimated in his ability to count votes for the purpose of being a self-serving prick...he's the 'sith' version of 'jedi master' Nancy, if that makes sense.

(4,066 posts)I'm not being disrespectful. I just don't think McCain is all that great when you get down to it. He had one or two redeeming moments and the rest of the time he was pure Republican.
There are plenty of more deserving people. How about we pick some deserving females?

(16,887 posts)But they tend to prefer members of congress for their buildings....
I still think McCain would be a great choice....even if just to irritate the shit out of Trump and remove the name of a segregationist.

(4,066 posts)Don't take that the wrong way. The Congress was closed to female members for so long most of the distinguished ones are still alive and kicking and fighting.

(82,849 posts)Naming something after a person should wait until five years after that person's demise is my rule of thumb. That lets the passions calm a bit and gives a bit of perspective to a person's entire life and career.
I'd like to rename it for Carol Moseley-Braun, but she's still alive. Margaret Chase Smith comes to mind, though "Smith Office Building" kind of loses some of the cachet. There's also Maurine Brown Neuberger from Oregon. A Jewish woman replacing Russell's name would cause people to hope they buried him face down, so that when he rolled over in his grave, he'd be comfortable.
