By and large John McCain supported the destructive GOP agenda. His most noble act recently was that Senate vote. As far as a his support of veterans as a Vietnam veteran myself I found his support for veterans lacking. HIs life would have been much better served if he were a progressive. Small government only serves the rich. And small government in the end falls short serving the public at large.
Of course he deserves accolades for his military service and his actions as a prisoner of war. Certainly his courage is extraordinary. Even though he broke during his capture. Everyone have their breaking point.

(3,483 posts)it was his ONE CHANCE to get even with tRump for his infamous "I like people who weren't captured". Guaranteed if he didn't have that score to settle he would have been shouting "AYE" at the top of his lungs.

(10,602 posts)The very idea of small government leads to the idea of privatizing government services. It also includes turning veterans care to private insurance agencies and NOT the VA. I do not particularly admire McCain because being a conservative Republican betrays the very values of the country. He complained that the country did not represent what he created. But that comment was a blind comment in that he created that kind of country he was disappointed because he was a Republican who supported the same agenda he now detested.
In on respect he was war hero, but politically he was largely a failure except for that one vote. I resented him as a vet because any veteran who is a GOPPER betrays veterans because all the GOP doe is use veterans as a prop for political convenience. The FVA does not function as it should because of GOP sabotage.

(6,139 posts)But lets not forget that his vote would mean nothing if Collins and Murkowski voted otherwise so he was not the only republican to vote NO.
McCain will always be remembered as an American hero. His other monumental achievement was his critical role
in passing Magnitsky Act, one of the most important pieces of legislation of this decade. He is on Putins enemies list. I think the epiphany of 2016 election was that there is a large number of far right extremist voters within repub party base whose influences were kept in check thanks to reublicans like McCain, Romney and even Bush W. Now the radical white nationalist base has been uleashed by trump and God only knows what it will lead us to.
