(31,395 posts)I can see the dome from my apartment. Just stepped out and took this photo of the lowered flags a few minutes ago.
We have a Democratic Governor and you can bet Governor Cooper is also very aware of how many military bases are located in North Carolina. Not lowering the flags at the White House for Senator McCain is not going to sit well with active military and Veterans.

The United States flag and the state flag of Arkansas are hereby lowered to half-staff in tribute to the memory of Arizona Senator John McCain. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of interment.
Governor Asa Hutchinson released the following statement:
"John McCain reflected in every breath of his life the American character and American idealism. As a war hero, a political maverick and leader he personified sacrifice and courage. I witnessed his strength of character both in Congress and as a campaigner. We will miss him."

said all state flags will fly at 1/2 mast until he is intered. She claims only the President can order flying the stars and stripes at 1/2 mast. I let her know that Mr. Trump was behaving in a contemptible manner.

(7,888 posts)I will research before calling his office back to challenge the response. I did find an article that stated Gov. Brewer had ordered flying the American flag at 1/2 staff.

Called the Governor's Office back, with a copy of the law on flying the US flag at half staff. It was in the state's official FAQ.

I was told there must have been a misunderstanding. Yes, both flags lowered until after the interment. Now, I'd best have a few others call to verify. Will check with a local media contact here, nothing in print that I can find.
I will take a drive by the Capitol to check it with my own eyes after business hours and traffic clears out. One way streets are a pain to navigate.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Governor Gina M. Raimondo is directing U.S. and Rhode Island flags at all state agencies and buildings to be flown at half-staff in honor of Senator John McCain. Flags should return to full-staff at sunset on the day of interment, Sunday, September 2.
"John McCain was a war hero, dedicated patriot and true fighter until the very end," said Governor Raimondo. "He wore our nation's uniform with honor as a Navy pilot and represented Arizona in Congress for nearly four decades. His death is a loss for our nation, but especially for his loved ones. Andy and I are keeping the entire McCain family in our thoughts and prayers."
Raimondo also asks Rhode Islanders to lower their flags to half-staff during this time as a mark of respect.

(42,760 posts)On this official state of Florida website it says ... On this page, you can learn about the status of the flag. At this time there is no mention at all about Sen McCain. Apparently Governor Rick Scott doesn't want to offend his buddy Trump.
