They're not truly independent. A lot of them have very defined political views but don't support the party because it doesn't go far enough in their minds.

Jill Stein voters count as "independents" in this graphic. So do quite a few of the "tear it all down" bomb-throwers who support Trump and loathed McCain.

When you factor in Trump's 90% approval rating among Republicans you can infer that a lot of Republicans left the party. He has a bigger share of a smaller base.
