O'Neill, Inouye, depending on your point of view, have been called "lions" of the Senate. These were iconic senators who devoted many years to the job, and eventually became venerated for their contributions. McCain and Kennedy were definitely lions (and Al Franken could have become one, had it not been for ... never mind, don't get me started...). There aren't any more lions. There are only sheep, weasels, rats and snakes.

(3,433 posts)I am thinking about respect and influence from both sides. Given the current toxicity of the Republican party, few would likely publically admit their admiration or respect but I think its present.
