the ICE spokesman said that "naturalized" Hispanic Americans were going to have their citizenship examined because of insufficient paperwork, described it more or less that forms years ago did not ask questions as new forms do.
The spokesman said it would only affect a couple thousand citizens.

thus today we see part of what he meant: we haven't heard about the people still in USA, yet.

outside of the Holocaust (capital H) to which you refer.

But when used in the context of the OP it is pretty clear the intended meaning.

Does not matter the meaning of the word in the early 1900s. Since the 1940s when that word is used 99.99% of the time it is referring to definition number 3. I could say 100% of the time and not really be off base.

By the time Jews were sent to the concentration camps for the Final Solution many lesser things had happened for years. Only those who planned each step along the way knew what was being done.

It hasn’t yet manifested into state sanctioned genocide, but history students of the Holocaust can see the early signs being implemented. It’s actually a fact that the Nazi government just grew into implementing the actual Final Solution.

No one who is decent will ever be disrespectful of the mass murder of 6 million Jews which was actually sanctioned by the German government as an official policy. to the 1300's (that's NOT a typo), there is much usage and interpretation associated with it for centuries before it was used to describe the genocide of the Jewish population.

This application of the word occurred as early as 1942, but the phrase the Holocaust did not become established until the late 1950s.

It therefore seems a bit myopic to presume that the only acceptable modern usage of "holocaust" refers to The Holocaust. There is a vast difference.

Other terms which share the same fate might be:
1) the Renaissance vs. a renaissance
2) the Crusades vs. a crusade

BTW: Just a few years ago I had the occasion of touring Stutthof Concentration Camp near Gdansk, Poland. I am not Jewish, but wished to tour this (now) museum to see and understand firsthand the history of the atrocities to which the Jewish population had been subject. It was the most solemn experience of my life, and will never be forgotten. During that same trip, I also visited the Berlin Holocaust Memorial. I am most sympathetic to the fate of the millions who were exterminated and any of their family members who were fortunate to escape.

I used to think there wasn’t a thing they could do about the rapidly growing majority of brown people in our country, but I never thought they would actually try to persecute and eliminate them. 11. What the Administration wants is to pit . . .

Americans against Americans, to create subsets within the culture. To divide us along racial, religious and ethnic lines is a first step in elimination/exclusionary ideology--a white Christian nation for white Christians only.

The faux historical references are already in place as is the language of hate. The Imposter-in-Chief incites his followers to detest, disrespect and devalue the Other. The ugliness, the insane, off-the-chart conspiracies we hear on almost a daily basis has purpose because it's a way to whip up confusion, distrust and paranoia.

Sounds preposterous but these things start with small steps. Which is why we have to stop the madness while we still can.
