General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am 72. I want to say this to younger voters.
On All In on MSNBC tonight there was a discussion of what would happen if we do not retake the House.
We could not only lose Obamacare but also
Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, protections for LGBTQ citizens, womens ability to choose and anything else the Repubs have on their wish list.
Trump will never face the courts for any of his illegal doings.
Being 72, I dont think the rest of my life would be impacted by these things.
I have never missed an election in my life. I wont miss this one.
Younger peoples lives will be seriously impacted if we lose this opportunity.
Voting in November for the Democrats, any Democrat, is probably the most important thing we can do for ourselves.
Forget about left, right, center. To hell
with labels like socialist or establishment.
That does not matter in this election.
Dont even talk about it here.
WE MUST REMAIN UNITED!
Vote in November for Democrats as if your life depended on it because it does.

No wiggle room, no time for cat yowling. Unless that yowling is united, pitched to the only note worth hearing, the one that slams it out of the park in November.
That's how we win and save the damn country!

It may not be important for a lot of people my age but one day they won't be able to ignore it any longer when the true horrors of this administration comes into the light. Stay strong to all and let's take the house and the senate!

Somehow us old folks have failed to get youngsters fired up. Only 55 percent say they will "probably or definitely vote" and they're split as to whether they're favorable or unfavorable toward the Democratic party. They need the OP's message.

(224 posts)I am also 72. I struggle with fears for the future if my son and grandchildren and his different this country is becoming it its ignorance on too many historic and political matters.
I am a woman. My adult son does not object to pro-choice philosophically but I never realized until this year's political conversation with him that even very open minded men rarely understand pro-choice as women do. When I finished talking to him (in the presence of my younger granddaughters. He admitted he finally realized WHY it matters to me.
I hope it changes and all our fears are removed. But it still matters that we speak out with our experiences. Best wishes to you for a fine comment.

By planning parenthood we shape our whole lives now. To go back to the days of no birth control or no choice or no planning is what the right is wanting.

(51,592 posts)In every single election from the smallest local ones to the presidential. I guess it was ingrained in me since I have never missed any either. I went to the STOP KAVANAUGH protest last weekend and saw only a dozen millennials there and that was disappointing. But I felt better today when I read that the mayor of NY and David Hogg (the Parkland School student who advocated for gun control just voted for the first time in FL) are working together to register people to vote. The Parkland students who had the March For Our Lives gun control rallies also had Vote For Your Lives rallies across the US this Summer. I wish more younger people would realize how their futures are going to be greatly effected by the Nov election.
Yesterday I started a postcard writing campaign with a neighbor through the ACLU to hand write postcards to send to registered voters in our state who did not vote in the last election. We nave to do whatever we can. I am making more buttons by hand to give away to people who like mine. Talking to people, even strangers, is easy and anyone can do it.

(32,639 posts)We oldsters may not be affected so much, just as you say Wasupaloopa.
But our kids and grandkids will have their lives torn apart. Hell there won't even be a country for them, when they get to be our age. (Many of us on DU are baby boomers, so we've reached retirement age already.) We have to find a way to make the under-30 adults realize how important this election is. This is no time to say "Well I don't like her" or "He's not liberal enough" or whatever.
The Republicans need to be smacked back to hell where they came from, and then we have to slam and lock the gate so they can't ever get out again. We need all the Avengers on board this November!

I'm not convinced we will communicate effectively this fall.
I'm also worried the Republicans will attempt to get rid of many of those things in the lame duck congress, regardless of the result but especially if they lose. I'm sure people will tell me this reason and that reason it can't happen. Sorry, these are Republicans circa 2018. It can happen.

Even the GOP is smart enough not to cut benefits from existing recipients because they're only hope of winning anything is geezers. Younger people, though, could be severely impacted immediately and in the long run. Everyone must vote and do not be swayed by the third party BS. Our form of government isn't conducive to 3 parties. (56,828 posts)I had been told that Social Security and Medicare wouldn't be around for me when I was at retirement age because of our aging population. Imagine another 25-35 or more years of RW propaganda on "entitlements" about Social Security and Medicare? The "kids" in their late teens and 20s now have no idea what it would be like to live without SS or Medicare as a retiree because they're not thinking that far ahead or not planning on those "entitlements" even being around for them to use.

(37,648 posts)Young people, especially young women, you just don't know the rights and programs that have come along to make our lives better since I was a child.
You stand to lose all of these things. Women...it is STILL illegal to pay you less than a man, but when I was a kid, it was LEGAL not to hire you in the first place. And if you were black, forget it.
There were no female doctors, engineers, accountants, cable installers, etc., when I was a child. If you were a minority woman, you were out of luck all 'round...no life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness for you. White men had all the good jobs. All of them. Heck, you were even prevented from voting in some places. A bill had to be passed to make sure you got to vote.
You would look forward to an almost certainty of living your senior years in poverty, as you struggle to live on your own savings and pay full price for increasing medical bills, since Social Security and Medicare would be gone.
You would have to pass a written literacy exam in order to vote in some places.
The country might revert back to a time without civil rights, if Rand Paul's way of thinking would take hold. Imagine trying to go on a road trip without being able to use public restrooms or eat at restaurants or stay at any hotel or motel. If your job requires you to travel, there goes your job, too.
Some women would die writhing in pain and eaten up with infection and injuries from alley abortions.
The hatred of white supremacy would be unleashed even more than now.
Unions and the protections they bring would be in danger. Guaranteed overtime, the EEOC, our environment, the protection of our national parks for future generations...so many things would be in danger.
There has never been a more critical time to vote in my lifetime than now. The lives of young people literally depend on it. It sounds overly dramatic and fear mongering. But I believe it's true. So many things are at stake.

(40 posts)I also am 72 and a lifelong Californian Democrat. I love living in a Blue state.
I'm worried about the damage this loser in our WH is doing to our country.
I talk to young people all the time about voting and running for office. I for one, think we need lots more younger people in office. Although I'm sharp, very informed and
always open to change, we have way too many old dinosaurs in office that are stuck way back in the 50's. And no, I'm not talking about Pelosi or Feinstein. Before abortion was legal, women died from back alley abortions. My best friend's mom died from one and she grew up without a mom. We women can't lose the right to determine our future. We also must have universal health care. We also need immigration reform.
We also need to make sure the LGBTQ have equal rights as you do. We want better education and low college costs. If the young care about their future, they will have to fight, vote and do like we did in the 60's and 70's. We fought for change and it wasn't easy.
Trump and the GOP are planning (if they get two more elected senators), to take away all health care under the ACA act (Obama care).
Social Security is in danger also with the republicans in control. They gave the rich a huge tax cut while refusing to grant federal workers their agreed upon raise. They also plan to cut SS COLA and deny future COLSA. Do vote and vote Blue. If you care. Give a ride to the polls to anyone you know that needs a ride.
It's our future and the future of a healthy planet to get these climate denying crazies out of our government.. They put Russian interests before ours for $$ as trump does. I support Universal health care, but I don't ever support Bernie Sanders. He never explained why he put Russian interests before American when he and Rand Paul voted NO on the Russian Sanctions bill that was to punish Russia for attacking our elections. His lame excuse was total BS.
RVN VET71
(2,690 posts)To the younger voters: we honestly tried, folks. Really we did. But despite our efforts, we have stuck you with a dangerous narcissist as president* who is bent on accelerating the already verified decline of the planet, who is bent on allying and subordinating the U.S. to Russia, and putting into motion so many other evils it would take a page just to list them.
In November we have a final chance to make things right again. So it's up to you, to me, to all of us, to vote.
Because if the vote in November is not Democratic, massively Democratic, we stand to lose everything. Let me repeat that: all of the social and environmental safeguards in place to maintain America as a land of hope will be lost. Individual liberty will be lost. The dignity and respect of America, already terribly weakened, will be lost.
But worse, perhaps, even than that, we stand to lose the most precious right of all, the right to vote. The GOP has been trying, with frightening success, to restrict and/or obstruct the right to vote of millions of Americans over the past 20 years. They will not stop as long as the GOP retains power.
So vote! Even if the Democratic candidate(s) are repulsive to you -- as some are to me -- vote for them. Hold your nose, if you have to, but vote. Vote for your future, for your children's future, for their children's future.

(4,651 posts)But where was everyone during the 2016 election? I've heard Bernie Sanders and Thom Hartmann say that the American electorate is smart, as a majority says in polls that they want Medicare for all, free college, a livable minimum wage among other progressive issues.
If this is true how could they ever have voted for a billionaire huckster who has had nothing but utter contempt for working people his entire life?
And OK I get that voter suppression and gerrymandering led to the GOP takeover of the House. But how do you explain the Dems losing the senate?
The upcoming election results will totally depend on turnout.
All the best for your children...
