Deep in a Politico report about President Trumps attempt to build support for firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whom Trump loathes for recusing himself from the investigation of a campaign he was part of, is a striking artifact of Trumpism. The presidents swelling complaints against Sessions include the fact that he doesnt have the Ivy League pedigree the president prefers and that Trump cant stand his Southern accent.
Conservatives have spent decades depicting liberals as coastal snobs. Entire campaigns were built from this theme, from Michael Dukakiss Harvard Yard boutique to various Democrats failing to display the requisite enthusiasm for Nascar. Every image of Barack Obama in the right-wing media cast him gazing downward imperiously, a pose that conservatives seemed to think captured his contempt for the good people of the heartland.
Given the attention they have lavished on such picayune details as John Kerrys failure to order cheesesteak properly, its not even possible to imagine what they would do with direct evidence of a president disdaining his attorney generals University of Alabama law degree and regional accent. Imagine one of those scenes from a 90s action movie where the bad guys are wearing night-vision goggles in the dark, and then suddenly faced with blinding light.

(46,111 posts)He's tried, really tried to be accepted into their pristine ivied realms.
In the early 80s, he tried to apply to become a member of the Maidstone, an old and established tennis and beach club in Easthampton. The management even told him not to bother filling out the applicaton.
Trump built golf courses around the world in competition with other clubs, e.g., The Tuxedo Club, Shinecock, National, St. Andrews, etc.
Trump has never been invited to sit on ANY corporate Board of Directors.
Trump is not part of a the Elites' clique of socializing, although Ivanka would love to be part of it all.
Trump is someone the Elite have to tolerate but they abhor him as Trump abhors his "base" of supporters.
Great Gatsby on steroids.

(22,037 posts)Trump has never been asked to be on a board of directors because real business people know that he's a fraud. If you were the CEO of a billion dollar corporation, would you want a board member who went bankrupt not once but 6 times? What would that say to your shareholders?
Besides, what advice could Trump offer? He always wants to be the boss and board members are never the boss.

(63,221 posts)He has been rejected by the nation's true elite, yet he turns around and snubs his nose at his WalMart adorers. He knows he needs them because they are the only people who will accept him, yet he is resentful that he has such a low-brow following. He wouldn't let most of these people sit on his furniture, yet he has managed to convince them that he is their stalwart champion and is 100% on their side.
What a con! And how stupid can his base be for falling for his bullshit.

I'm hoping that Omarosa has a tape like that somewhere. I think that would be the straw that would break the camel's back. Trump dissing his supporters.

(1,089 posts)I think he could set a group of them on fire and the rest of them would still worship him. The truest thing he ever said was that he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose a vote.
Worship is a dangerous thing, and these rubes worship him, they don't just support him.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)That would be perfect if there was such a thing. I am hoping that someone at some point comes up with such a tape because I think that might just break the spell.

The truth is everyone except self-serving sycophants and his rabid base reject Trump. He will never be accepted by the people he wants to admire him, even though he is president of the United States.

(26,060 posts)his name all over the place. And we've all seen pics of his apartment in trump tower - so tacky and gross. He's never been part of what he would consider the "elites" in NY.
He owned the Plaza Hotel briefly in the late 80s/early 90s and wanted to put his name up there. The outrage was enough to shake Manhattan and then he was in financial trouble (the start of his money laundering for the russians) and had to sell it.

(9,291 posts)of having to listen to Trumps b.s. since I was in my teens.
He hates all those red state people, besides Florida, because they can't take property under a bankruptcy. Thinks they are all suckers, and he's so much better them them. Religious people, ha! He's using them, he's never been religious or even republican till recently. I guess since he couldn't afford the installment payment to the Russians.
All of this history was so easy to locate. Worries us all on how quickly people buy into a act, when all the facts could be found. These are adults who sign contracts to live in America. To buy a house, car or even to open a credit card. Due diligence, they don't make the effort.

(7,220 posts)One thing Repugs are good at is smearing decent people, while painting actual elitists like "one of us" --like saying GWB is a guy you'd want to have a beer with or showing him "cuttin' some brush" like a good ol' boy, or showing Rump eating KFC.
The only other thing they're good at is giving money to rich people. And the rubes yell "that's fantastic, give us more of that!!"
