I know it's an overworked analogy, but: the bus we're on is being driven toward a cliff.

The smiling smirking driver keeps pointing to the left or the right---any place but where we're heading and while groping anyone in a skirt---and the passengers are outraged! They go on at length about the driver's recklessness, his incompetence, his criminality, his vulgarity and how he is not their REAL driver. But, there is a sign at the front which reads: "PASSENGERS---REMAIN SEATED UNTIL BUS COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP", so they all obey. They follow the rules.

And, the driver smiles. And the bus speeds toward the clearly visible cliff.
