For those saying we should be more like the Europeans, less prudish, let me add that we have visited many churches in Europe over the past decades, and many have a dress requirement - one would not be allowed in, even to visit, in that dress. We found this in Florence a matter of weeks ago when a young girl in front of us had to purchase a scarf from a sidewalk vendor to tie around her waist before she was allowed to enter.

...I have spent the last 35 years of my life away from my family and loved ones, living and working in austere, miserable environments and dangerous conditions, doing my part to keep this flawed but still wonderful country safe from it's enemies and from people who would be happy to carve out YOUR eyes just because you're an American. I've held the hands of friends and comrades as they lay dying from gunshots and IEDs, and I've picked up and bagged body parts in order to make sure that devastated families back home had something, ANYTHING to weep over and bury. I've rescued hostages, comforted surviving victims of ethnic cleansing, fed babies who had no one left to do so, and helped make sure life-sustaining supplies were safely delivered through hostile territory to desperate human beings who were in dire need of them in order to stay alive.

I could go on but I'll just leave it there because I've done it and will continue to do it without wanting or needing any recognition whatsoever from anyone other than those who were and are there with me.

...only sounds like something from a Hollywood screenplay to those who have never put their very lives on the line for a cause greater than themselves. It's all good to sit at your keyboard and bitch about everything that isn't exactly to your liking but what have you actually gone out and really sacrificed in order to bring about any real change? I'm not talking about signing a petition, knitting pussy hats, or carrying a sign in a protest march, I'm talking about seriously putting your ass on the line. Ever been arrested and jailed for taking a stand against "the actions taken by your government that employs people like me to carry out the dirty work?" Have you gone hungry because you donated most of your money to feed the homeless and destitute? Have you gone down to the border and walked into the desert, dodging the Border Patrol in order to help bring terrified, bedraggled refugees across the frontier? Have you adopted a Black or Brown baby?

Of course you haven't and you're not about to either. Everybody wants to be a revolutionary until it's time to do revolutionary shit.

You're content to sit back and enjoy your creature comforts while you shake your fist at the sky, cursing everything and everybody that doesn't fall in lock-step with your myopic, hyper-partisan view of what you think the world in general and this country in particular should be. That might work for you but it sure as fuck doesn't work for me and I'm grateful to have experienced the things that I have and learned the things that I did so I know how to employ those tactics and protocols effectively going forward. Look around and read the tea leaves, sport; there are people out there who would label you a traitor and take what they consider appropriate action against you merely for posting what you did above. When that happens, it'll be "people like me" who'll be there to defend you and come to your rescue, no matter how snarky you want to be right now. Remember that.

I am not commenting on the AG situation because I do not know what she was told about attire.

But as to your post, I have been to many churches all over Europe that would not allow someone in wearing that dress. Not saying none would, but it would not surprise me if a majority of Christian churches and cathedrals would allow it.

Now our society as a whole being prudish I don’t disagree totally when only compared to Western Europe. But compared World wide we are libertines.

If this were at an arena or stadium, I'd be fine with it.

I didn’t give it a second thought. Pull your pants up, pull your dress down, don’t wear your hair like that, don’t show too much vleavage, don’t wear all that makeup, your hat looks silly, you’re wearing the wrong color, you can’t do it right.

Because my grandmother would have had words with me for wearing such a dress even to a club.

I don't think Aretha spent her career policing the outfits of other women, or was as much of a prude as my grandmother. So I'm not stressed, because I don't think the deceased would be.

She sang the song true-to-form, without a lot of extra drawn-out syllables or long trilling "enhancements." It was heartfelt and genuine, in my opinion, and I loved the backup singers as part of it. A fine performance, a fine tribute; the outfit works fine for her, and she looks fine in it. What's the problem?

It ain’t about you or your notion of RESPECT ; Aretha almost certainly wouldn’t mind it. She knows who she invited to this occasion. The tribute was the song and she did that well. Empowerment comes in many forms and that’s why trying to get it to conform to old fashioned ideas is a waste of time.

Accusing him of “looking her up and down” in that dress. I saw the footage. You can too. It’s ridiculous. He does look at her. She’s right in front of him. He didn’t leer, drool, sneer, snicker. He’d have had to have closed his eyes not to look at her. But they’re attaching meaning they have no clue about because they want to shame him and make others hate him. For nothing. For being who he is. For not being able to be seen for what he’s doing but what they can say he’s doing.

So what side are you on?

I didn't see anything wrong with it. A lot of young women wear short black dresses to funerals. And Arianna was there to perform, as well. I think people should wear what they thing is appropriate to such ceremonies, and I leave it at that.

I don't see the problem with her dress at all. Is that the main thing you took from watching the funeral?

Young women, including me, wore dresses about that length all the time. It just looks a little weird to me now, but I had to check my attitude by remembering the scanty clothes we worse back then, way less than is worn today.

Yes, I know that this is a church. But its a "Celebration of Life" service and I think Grande's dress fit in with celebrating the young vibrant Aretha. And from inside her casket, I doubt very much Aretha minded.

I don't have a problem with the outfit itself, but I believe that she or her handlers chose it specifically because they knew it would spark controversy, and bring more attention to her. This performance should have been more about Aretha, and a more respectful outfit wouldn't have distracted from that.
