(182,861 posts)It used to be statewide but now it's mostly east of I 95. We called it the "Virginia Beach rule" (Richmond calls it the "Kings Dominion" - theme park- rule) because businesses needed teenagers to work throughout the tourism season. Starting about 20 years ago Virginia counties could petition to start earlier and build in more snow days for areas west. Last week my daughter and I drove 30 miniutes to the outdoor pool we belong to and no one was there - school in that county started the week before.

(8,383 posts)start date was 8/13. One county over started on 8/8, I think. We always started on the Wednesday after Labor Day on Long Island when I was growing up. I would have hated for our daughters to have such an early start - as it was, they would start back around 8/25. Too much summer left for that start date. Of course I liked having the kids at home in the summertime. ETA we are in Virginia now.
