A grand jury will investigate whether Kris Kobach intentionally botched voter registration in 2016

The Kansas Supreme Court has ruled that a grand jury must be convened to investigate whether Secretary of State Kris Kobach intentionally botched voter registration in the state in the 2016 elections. Kobach, the Republican candidate for Kansas governor in the upcoming 2018 midterms, is a key ally of President Donald Trump on voter fraud and headed the president’s since-disbanded election fraud commission.

This all stems from a petition filed in 2016 by Lawrence, Kansas resident Steven Davis, who made an unsuccessful run for the Kansas House that year and again in 2018. He asked for a probe into whether Kobach and others in his office engaged in “destroying, obstructing, or failing to deliver online voter registration.”

According to the Lawrence Journal-World, the 2016 petition also calls for an investigation into whether the office had fake or altered registration books that prevented people from voting or was “grossly neglectful with respect to their election duties.”

Kobach dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, and his office has said that they’re related to a short time in 2016 when certain online voter registrations malfunctioned.

Let's hope this turns up the evidence the petitioner believes it will.

Actually, we know KS government is mostly Koch-staffed in general and dirty as hell, but, presumably righteous, 29-year-old, ex- Democratic candidate petitioner v. evil Republican Kobach notwithstanding, it's a little disturbing that this is happening this close to an election without any evidence. KS Republican lawmakers amended the law to make this possible, and now it's backfiring on them. Just glad it's happening to a vicious scummer like Kobach.

The Court of Appeals ruled Friday that the lower court had erred when it ruled that Davis needed to provide “specific allegations of a crime, when only general allegations are required by the statute.” ...

The Court of Appeals noted that lawmakers tweaked the law in 2013 to make it easier to call a citizen grand jury. It was a change that was primarily supported by conservative Republicans at the time.

“In issuing our decision today, we are mindful that the mere calling of a grand jury directed at the actions of a public official or a private individual without probable cause to believe a crime has been committed and without the guiding hand of a professional prosecutor can have serious personal and professional consequences,” the ruling said.

“But the Kansas Legislature has determined that it wants to provide for citizen-initiated grand juries and it wants them to have broad powers to investigate possible criminal activity. The wisdom of this law is not a concern of our court.”

Go get 'em, Laura Kelly! KS's teacher's union also just endorsed our Democratic candidate.
