Nike commercialization of Kaepernick protest accomplishes one thing that could be important

Jamil Smith @JamilSmith 42m42 minutes ago

Is this a corporation seeking to profit off of the pursuit of social justice? Yes. But this accomplishes one thing that could be important. The NFL is now facing pressure from one of its biggest partners to end its collusion against @Kaepernick7. Nike makes the team uniforms.

They can seek profit and also have a social conscience. The two are not mutually exclusive. Amaryllis Sep 2018 #12

When you buy something PLEASE remember to tell either the customer service person on the phone or if you’re using an email address WHY you’re buying Nike. And if you think of it,ask them please to pass it on up the company’s food chain.

Customer feedback! Maximum Mondo Important, particularly NOW. They’re already doing this campaign because they’re sensitive to the needs and preferences of their customers and they can read the polls and get a sense of trends. It’s market research and some supervisor or manager will find that information useful and informative. And valuable! Positive feedback will be MOST valuable to Nike, its ad agency or internal ad people and if its sales go up on the heels of this campaign, there will be plenty of motivation to do another one - a variation of a theme.

And whoever originally thought it up can list it onhis/her resume and get more jobs from it. Nothing succeeds like success - in advertising, politics, public relations, and job-seeking!

As Nike would advise - “Just Do It.”

It's a myth that corporations are purely interested in the bottom line. The NYU economist, W Edwards Deming, who helped to rebuild Japan's economy after WWII, said businesses are most successful that pursue "whole systens optimization."

Others have spoken of a "triple bottom line."

Pure greed is a myth, but since Reagan we have allowed that myth to overpower other values like democracy, equality, love, aesthetic sensitivity, and biophilia.

They make how many billions on NFL uniforms? If they're the official, supplier?

They're risking that against ... what? How many people will support them if the NFL decides to punish them by taking away the contract?

Somebody, somewhere, did a lot of math for this decision.

I wonder if there will be a backlash, particularly by Trumpers, who boycott at the drop of a hat.

I'm sure Nike did its research. It sells globally, after all. Can't wait to read what Nike investors will think. (I read up on investment sites for my 401k stuff.)
