Jon Kyl to be sworn in today as John McCain's successor in the U.S. Senate

Jon Kyl, the former U.S. Senator from Arizona who once served alongside the late Sen. John McCain, will be sworn into office in the chamber on Wednesday morning.

Kyl was named Tuesday by Gov. Doug Ducey to step in for McCain, following the six-term senator's death on Aug. 25 after a battle with brain cancer.

Kyl, 76, is scheduled to be sworn into office at 9:45 a.m. Arizona time, according to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office. McConnell praised Kyl's return on Tuesday.

"As we continue to honor John's life of service and sacrifice for our nation, I hope all Senators will join me in welcoming our friend and former colleague Jon Kyl back to the Senate," he said in a prepared statement.
