Based on some old adage about, smoke followed by fire.
McConnell told the WH not to nominate him, but dirty Don was hell bent on trying to get a justice that would let him off the hook.
Now just imagine for a moment if Democrats take the Senate.
Ok, flame away. LOL

(58,785 posts)Most of this stuff was out there, including allegations of multiple perjury during his previous confirmations hearings, which should have been investigated and weren't, about Kavanaugh receiving and using property stolen from senate Democrats, again investigation blocked, etc.
But nothing more ever needed to be known after Kavanaugh's participation in the Republican swiftboating under Ken Starr. Masquerading as an investigation kept open for years, they enormously misused the power of the state to smear and disrupt the functions of the presidency and then to attempt to remove a president without cause. Extremely bad character was proven many times over, more than sufficient to deny anyone any position of trust and responsibility.
It's not that it wasn't known for what it was. Starr's involvement ended his own previously soaring career in the judiciary and federal government.
Democratic senators succeeding in getting the vote pushed back to next week. The hurricane is a very unfortunate distraction, of course. Kavanaugh could turn out to be it's worst, longest damage by far. But I'm signing on to the prediction. In spite of the fact that the NYT has nothing today on the nomination except one basic update article that reports actions and accusations but in no way examines Kavanaugh. Not even an opinion piece.

(92,338 posts)midterms, and McConnell has made it very clear this vote will take place before the midterms
Even though the odds favor them in the Senate, they aren't going to risk it

(31,261 posts)Otherwise, republicans take a real beating at the polls, with Heitkamp, Rosen and Semena pulling out wins. Kavanaugh not being withdrawn also helps Nelson, O'Rourke and Tester big.

(1,058 posts)the only action they've taken is to pass the letter on to the WH so it can be added to Kavanaugh's background file.

(14,985 posts)There's a timing/election issue at play. If they give up on Kav, and Trump has to choose a new one, and they have to have new hearings, etc. there is a risk that they won't get it done by the end of the term. They certainly won't get it done before the election if they have to choose a new nominee.
The likelier it looks that Dems could take the Senate, the likelier the GOP is to confirm Kav just to confirm ANYONE. They don't want to wait until November to know for sure if they need to do it in the lame duck session or not. They will do it just to have it done, regardless of how corrupt or terrible he is.

(338 posts)1. If a handful of quasi-moderate GOP senators are taking enough heat back home, enough might be persuaded to vote no on Kavanaugh, although I doubt it. Even if reason could peel off one or two, several Democratic senators in swing states seem poised to vote yes.
2. Even so, Kavanaugh's lifetime appointment might be subject to reconsideration through the means of post-confirmation investigations that produce new scandals, or possibly leading to impeachment. Only one U.S. justice has ever been impeached. Another, Abe Fortas, was forced to resign or face impeachment for accepting gifts from wealthy cronies who conceivably might have cases of interest before the court. Justice Clarence Thomas has accepted similar gifts without incident and it seems as if Kavanaugh might have had help paying for his family's lavish lifestyle, running up six-figure debts that magically disappeared in the year before Trump nominated him.

(872 posts)The repubs are simply playing the numbers game. If a story came out about Kavanaugh shooting someone on 5th Avenue, I still am fairly certain they would still get their 51 votes.
Honestly, I still see him getting 53-54 votes, thanks to the help of a few Democrats joining in as an effort to get re-elected.

(16,254 posts)I don't think he will end up with the job if for no other reason than the 5 lies (so far). I don't think the high school fiasco will kill his nomination, but then it depends on what he did. If he is so against abortion yet talked some girlfriend into getting one, that could add to the 5 possible perjuries and tie a knot on any possibility of a lifetime salary.
Trump wanted him because they seem to be birds of a feather. I think Kavanaugh is about as slimy as Trump...just not to that degree. I think they will find an interesting story behind the credit card debt, for one. Who, in their right mind would run up or charge $200K to a credit card unless it was interest free on outstanding balances?

(11,856 posts)I was thinking about his motivation for bringing his kids on opening day. Pure theater, but for what real reason ?
As bad as republicans want this seat filled with his ideological traits, it may be a bridge too far as the questions - and answers- come into focus the next day or so and the weekend
