Why Team Obama Loves the Ryan Pick

Why Obama Loves the Ryan Pick
We'll soon see a significant amount of polling on Mitt Romney's pick of Paul Ryan as his running mate, but for now, we have a Democracy Corps survey conducted last month.
It's conclusion was stunning:

"At the outset, the Ryan budget (described in Ryan's actual language) barely garners majority support. And voters raise serious doubts when they hear about proposed cuts -- particularly to Medicare, education, and children of the working poor. President Obama's lead against Romney more than doubles when the election is framed as a choice between the two candidates' positions on the Ryan budget -- particularly its impact on the most vulnerable. The President makes significant gains among key groups, including independents and voters in the Rising American Electorate (the unmarried women, youth, and minority voters who drove Obama to victory in 2008)."

SERIOUS ATTACK ON RYAN BUDGET TAKES TOLL ON MITT ROMNEY

Wednesday, July 18 2012

The most recent survey and focus groups by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner for Democracy Corps reveal deep opposition to the Ryan budget– and its potential to damage Mitt Romney’s candidacy if he embraces it in the coming campaign. [1] At the outset, the Ryan budget (described in Ryan’s actual language) barely garners majority support. And voters raise serious doubts when they hear about proposed cuts—particularly to Medicare, education, and children of the working poor.

President Obama’s lead against Romney more than doubles when the election is framed as a choice between the two candidates’ positions on the Ryan budget– particularly its impact on the most vulnerable. The President makes significant gains among key groups, including independents and voters in the Rising American Electorate (the unmarried women, youth, and minority voters who drove Obama to victory in 2008). This is an important new finding; highlighting the Ryan budget’s impact on the most vulnerable seriously weakens Romney.

Key Findings:

• The Ryan budget is a big target. Even described using Ryan’s own words, support for the budget barely gets majority support.

• Mitt Romney’s embrace of the Ryan budget erodes his support in a close race. Romney’s full-fledged support of the Ryan budget opens him up to attacks on big, decisive issues.

• Voters respond equally to three big critiques of the Ryan budget.Voters reject Ryan’s plan to allow the refundable child tax credit to expire, which would push the families of 2 million children back into poverty. Second, voters are deeply concerned about Ryan’s plan for Medicare and health care spending for seniors. Finally, voters strongly disapprove of cuts to education spending. These three facts about the Ryan budget are the most concerning to voters, especially unmarried women and Hispanic voters.

• Concern for the most vulnerable has a ballot box impact. After hearing balanced facts about the Ryan budget and messages on both sides, we asked voters to weigh the two Presidential candidates based on their positions on the Ryan budget and its impact on the most vulnerable. Not only does focusing on the most vulnerable not hurt the President, it helps him – Obama’s margin widens to 9 points, with his vote climbing above 50 percent.

Where are you getting that? If anything - it is a license to go hard left by showcasing what the GOP really wants to do with the social contract and tax cuts for the top 2%.

This is the first clear opportunity I have seen in my lifetime. Bush ran on his tax cuts for the rich by raiding Clinton's surplus. What does this ticket have other than "we cut taxes for the rich, it didn't work, so we need to cut taxes for the rich"?

Think about it. When was the last time you saw something as far RW and odious as the Ryan budget on a national ticket?

when the Econ team was named. Harshed the election high like I can't even describe. The very fuckers who created the mess, put in charge of "fixing" it. Pulling the public option off the table while allowing PHARMA and the Insurance Industry to write the damn bill for Baucus was another massive pissed off moment.

But I will say this - with the obstruction and congress setting record low favorability - the Administration DOES have the "we tried to work with them" card in their sleeve.

Five Times Mitt Romney Has Embraced The Ryan Budget

1. “Very supportive.”“I’m very supportive of the Ryan budget plan. It’s a bold and exciting effort on his part and on the part of the Republicans and it’s very much consistent with what I put out earlier. I think it’s amazing that we have a president who three and a half years in still hasn’t put a proposal out that deals with entitlements. This president’s dealing with entitlement reform — excuse me — this budget deals with entitlement reform, tax policy, which as you know is very similar to the one that I put out and efforts to reign in excessive spending. I applaud it. It’s an excellent piece of work and very much needed.”

2.”The right tone.” Romney told Talking Points Memo, “He is setting the right tone for finally getting spending and entitlements under control. …Anyone who has read my book knows that we are on the same page.’”

3. “Marvelous.” “I think it’d be marvelous if the Senate were to pick up Paul Ryan’s budgetand to adopt it and pass it along to the president,” Romney once professed while in Wisconsin.

Obama mocked him for this one:

They are going to hang Romney's embrace of the Ryan Plan around his neck.

Have a big discussion about it and for better for worse, the people of this country get to decide if they want to get royally fucked by the republicans or try to work on improving things in a sane and reasonable manner.

This is going to be an awesome election. No more hijacking people with social issues - now they will have to come face to face with the guts of it all and make a decision based on 2 diametrically opposed world views.

LIV RW voters have heard about tax cuts for the rich (or "job creators" as Frank Luntz rebranded those who make their money from Wall Street, not actual work) - and this year, they get to be schooled on exactly where that money offset comes from in order to fund things like the military and our infrastructure.

I. Can't. Wait.

You want to see the Democrats as not moving left, that's your right. But another way of seeing it is that they prevented Republicans from moving as far right as they wanted.

Optimism versus pessimism, IMO.

blaming people who don't ever vote Republican for helping to drag the country right.

The people, including the pundits, who continue to confuse the electorate with "both parties are the same" bullshit are more to blame.

Trying to depress the vote is no different from Republican attempts to suppress it.

Sun Aug 12, 2012, 09:13 AM
Aug 2012

Paul Ryan is the exact arsehole Obama/Biden have been hoping for.

He's hideous.. more so than even Rmoney himself.

This is perfect- because we've already seen people in our nation- who actually
have a moral compass, attack and deride Ryan's budget meat cleaver which
(hopes) to decimate the social safety net. Really? are ALL repugs in congress on
board with this?

doubtful.

so now Obama's job just got much easier... we citizens who actually have a soul/heart
are going to smack Ryan's absurd "budget" down severely.

it's a win for Obama.
