1. He can’t trust Trump to give him a pardon, which in itself could be obstruction of justice.

2. At 67 years old, he didn’t want to die in prison.

The Russians figured out that Trump is so unstable that he is more of a danger than an asset. So they let Manefort know to go ahead and rat on Trump, and that they wont hurt him. Their intelligence services might even be talking to ours to some degree. He is not much use to them now anyways, since so much of the country knows what's going on.

in addition to the charges he was just found guilty of! It was either die in prison or cooperate.

who would spend life in prison before "snitching." I still think he's a hardened thug, but apparently Mueller had him cornered in a way that was actually worse than the threat posed by Putin.
