is this the iconic photo from Hurricane Florence? I'm seeing it in multiple news stories

it's used as the thumbnail photo to advertise the story. washington post, daily news, sfgate and others are using this photo as the primary photo.

Robert Simmons Jr. and his kitten 'Survivor' are rescued from floodwaters in New Bern on Friday in the aftermath of Florence

His beard with streaks of gray match the cat's wet fur, the background shows the flood, you can see the distress in both of them.

I doubt it's iconic because there are elements that could be improved - a larger portion of the photo given to show more background, the indeterminate item between his body and right arm - would be really great if that were water, the electric lines could be removed. Hope the photographer took several more pics, sometimes subtle differences makes a better photo.

Also, some of the background may have been cropped out for the publication.

I hope he took a rapid shutter series of pics. That sometimes captures many subtleties.

You have to let it play for about 30 seconds before it gets to them.

I live in Raleigh (NC) and have been glued to the news about the storm. Had just been looking at the news stories on-line from the Raleigh newspaper and was going to come here and post the video. Ha. Not surprised to see that papers all around the globe have picked up the photo.

This is the story of people who don't leave. Limited finances. Family member who won't go. Pet to take care of. Previous history of multiple hurricane survivals. Track of the storm that puts the eye almost 90 miles away. So many difficulties.

That plaintive meowing and the look in Mr. Simmons' eyes. It just grabs your heart.
