(43,206 posts)His beard with streaks of gray match the cat's wet fur, the background shows the flood, you can see the distress in both of them.
I doubt it's iconic because there are elements that could be improved - a larger portion of the photo given to show more background, the indeterminate item between his body and right arm - would be really great if that were water, the electric lines could be removed. Hope the photographer took several more pics, sometimes subtle differences makes a better photo.

(31,396 posts)I live in Raleigh (NC) and have been glued to the news about the storm. Had just been looking at the news stories on-line from the Raleigh newspaper and was going to come here and post the video. Ha. Not surprised to see that papers all around the globe have picked up the photo.
This is the story of people who don't leave. Limited finances. Family member who won't go. Pet to take care of. Previous history of multiple hurricane survivals. Track of the storm that puts the eye almost 90 miles away. So many difficulties.
That plaintive meowing and the look in Mr. Simmons' eyes. It just grabs your heart.
