Everyone is an individual. Many people might be unwilling to admit they don't know anything about politics or how to vote so they don't want to talk about it.

She says she is not into politics.

I told her, politics is what decides how everything is run. It meant nothing to her.

I am a strong believer that by getting the non-voters out to vote, we really change this country (for the better).

If your sister is a non-voter and she doesn't follow politics, (and seemingly doesn't care about them at all), how is it beneficial to our country to get her to vote?

An ignorant voter is a 50%-50% proposition. It's kind of a wash.

But... but... but...

I want non-voters to care. I want them to learn about the candidates and make informed decisions. I want them to care about democracy.

It's funny that there are people who don't follow the news especially about our governments at all levels. Politics affects everything!

I'd be happy if Democratic voters show up and Republicans stay home.

Studies have shown that’s what works best. That is why political parties use tactics like send mailers targeted at non-voters that say things like “we see you didn’t vote in the last election, did you know 80% of your neighbors did?” Along with voter guides. People always complain they are a step too far, but the truth is that they work.

Shame them. Push them. Make it seem socially unacceptable to not vote, because it should be.

I think part of the non-voter problem is that our country has drunk the coolaid regarding the lie: Voting does not matter.

Don’t accept it when people bring it up, point out the consequences of not voting, every time they complain about anything possibly related to government (and almost everything can be) point out when you don’t make your voice heard you get whenever the people who do vote choose for you.

Make people who don’t vote ashamed to be non-voters.

I will go as far as looking up a persons voter history to see if they vote or not. In fact it’s an early way I screen people I date. Don’t vote? Not gonna go out with you.

I have and will look up friends to see if they are registered and if they have been voting. If they have been I give them praise. If registered and not voting regularly I offer rides to early voting and the polls on Election Day. “Hey, have you voted yet? No? How about I run you down to early voting tomorrow and then we go grab dinner on me.” If they are not registered I hand carry a registration form for them.

Government impacts every aspect of your life—every aspect! By not voting, you let someone else make all those decisions that affect you.

For instance, I don't vote because I'm withdrawing from society and preparing to die. I'm not sure what an effective counter-argument might be for that.

On edit: Before anyone gets too exercised, I'm Canadian, so I'm not destroying the American electoral system with this choice.

Then line up your talking points abiut how the current administration has an effect on the issue. You can usually find federal and state examples to prove your point.

I'm currently working on convincing a young woman to vote and I am making progress. Now she is listening to me and letting me talk about women's health issues and proposed cut backs on Medicaid and Medkicaid.

It's a long slow process, but plant the seeds and water gently.

Everyone knows someone who relies on these core Democratic programs, while Republicans have fought against & vowed to destroy them since their inception.
