About a year ago a woman came to me with a highly credible and deeply disturbing sexual assault accusation against a current senior government official. Over the past year, I have stayed in touch with her. She has been reluctant to come forward. Moments ago she sent me this text:

(50,318 posts)She will find far more who will support her than who will attack and attempt to smear her reputation.

(29,096 posts)but if you're trying to convince me that it wasn't a good idea to come forward, I doubt I could agree.....Female Gamers get death threats, for fuck's sake -- It's a mess, but she did a brave thing and came forward

(51,042 posts)But everyone in this thread is saying she was obliged to, and saying men won't stop assaulting women unless women out themselves through this gauntlet. That puts the onus on the victims and not the perpetrators.
I doubt I could go through what she is about to go through. I doubt I could possibly be strong enough.

(29,096 posts)but maybe they were just trying to make the point that an accusation made anonymously has no teeth, especially in this sort of high stakes political arena.

(2,599 posts)when white men ruled the roost and held all the jobs, including those even hillbillies today wouldn't stoop to do (but blame Mexicans for taking away from them). The little women mostly took their places at the side of their husbands, kept their pie holes shut and shot out one baby after another. Ahhh. The good old days! Women are for using and discarding in their minds. Any woman who voices an opposite opinion or dares to challenge their edicts is rotten goods. And, they want to send minorities back into subservient obeisance if not drive them out completely of the country. Kavanaugh and his brother-in-arms, Gorsuch, are just the rethugs' rubber stamp to all the legislation they plan to cram down the craws of every single American except their .01%-er friends.

(4,429 posts)It's our obligation as women to come forward.
I was harassed in a job years ago. I didn't make a very good complaint (I did complain, just not through the 'right' channels).
If I had to do it over again, I'd do it the 'right' way. There's a great deal more support than there was back then.
And even if there isn't enough - it's my obligation as a woman to come forward to protect other women.
It's a choice.

I know the choice I'd make. I just don't know what steps to protect our privacy, home, etc., should be taken first. Hopefully, the WaPo would have some suggestions.

(51,042 posts)of women, especially when changing men's behavior requires women to be pilloried all over the news, have their lives ripped open, just because they had the bad fortune of being in a room with an assaulter when they were 15.
Lets figure out a way to put the onus on the perpetrators, not the victims.

(37,748 posts)Many people are emphatically stating what they believe her obligations are.
Her only obligation is to get through her life on her terms.
Everything else is chickenshit wrapped up to make a few good political points.

(9,044 posts)Many girls, and boys, are confused and ignorant about their own bodies. I wonder if starting sex ed earlier would help women to say no? Might help boys to be more responsible too. Hence GOP, and Christian, opposition.

(13,783 posts)... when the momentum is behind uncovering the sense of entitlement men have felt at all walks of life, "Just grab her pussy." Finally speaking out is not necessarily going to result in being ignored. I hope the woman who spoke to NY Magazine will realize that and add her voice.
