He's not on the White House staff. Kelly could tell him that Trump is firing him, hoping for a resignation. He could hand an official letter from Trump firing him. But he cannot, himself, fire him.
So, at this point, we do not know what has happened or will happen.

(146,331 posts)Kelly is in charge of White House staff, not DOJ appointees. Different thing.

Guys like Kavanaugh are not one-timers. If he did it to one, he did it to others. Let's hope there's a blizzard of them about to blow the whistle on that asshole.

(17,865 posts)Make sure the process is followed to the letter. Even a political appointee has certain rights I would think. At a minimum it should be a termination letter signed by Trump or Sessions. In the case of Trump it should specify why he is bypassing Sessions.

(I'm leaning against there being a resignation or firing at this time)
Rosenstein at WH is Sessions resignation/firing redux? Rosenstein may keep his job.

(146,331 posts)I'm sure. However, threats of immediate dismissal do not. Often the hope is that the person resigns, which simplifies the other issues that would arise.
I don't know what has happened. We'll find out soon enough, I suppose.

(146,331 posts)If Rosenstein was fired, Trump signed something and Kelly handed it to him. I'm almost certain that Kelly does not have the authority to fire him. Chief of Staff does not come with that authority over Justice Department senior staff.

If Kavanaugh is pushed thru to the SCourt, as Grassley & McConnell demand, & Trump fires Rosenstein as a way to then fire Mueller, the result will be devastating for America.
Our protections will be compromised to the point of brutal.
Kavanaugh is KEY to absolving Trump & the coup from all dirty deeds.
