Perhaps I have misunderstood the function of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

You see, I thought these 21 Senators were like a "screening committee" to determine whether or not the full Senate should even consider approving the nominee. If a majority of the committee could not be persuaded to vote "yes" and recommend approval, I thought the it was the usual custom that the full Senate would not waste their time even considering Kavanaugh. Apparently, I was mistaken since McConnell says there WILL BE a vote by the full Senate, regardless of the vote in the committee.

So, the question I am now struggling to answer is, aside from the public fellating of Kavanaugh by virtually every Republican on the Judiciary Committee, what was the purpose of the time spent by the committee in "evaluating" him? It seems to have been a total waste of time, effort and tv coverage, but I must be mistaken again because these were Republicans in control of the proceeding and they would never waste taxpayers' funds on a meaningless fustercluck!

Would they?

It does seem frivolous if the command is 'approve at any cost' to seize power. n/t RKP5637 Sep 2018 #1
