You can see why Trump and the rest of his Republican enablers want to put Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. How can a person growing up so cloistered from average American struggles have any sort of empathy for the plight of the poor or middle class? How can someone have any sense that their white male rich perspective is not the default or the norm. No wonder he could literally wave his dick in some woman's face, yet feel that he is the victim for having his actions called out.

1. Lazy stereotyping...

There are plenty of private schools, even high dollar ones (I serve on the Board of a private school that charges about $30,000) that don't turn out serial assaulters AND teach a curriculum which recognizes the needs of those who are different.

(hint: FDR went to Groton -- current tuition is $52,000; JFK went to Choate -- current tuition is $57,000).

2. It does depend on the school. To our surprise, we sent our son to a boarding school...

On all sides of the family it's been public school all the way, except for some of the Catholic cousins sending their kids to parochial day schools.

Our parents valued education, and they dreamed of college for us, something they hadn't had for themselves. We went to public universities and graduated.

I really don't know what happened with my kids and public school, but when my daughter dropped out in 10th grade and her brother looked like he was going the same way, it was a sickening feeling. We happened on an article in the LA Times about a boarding school 40 miles away sitting on 2300 acres of dry chaparral and oaks. Their entire ethos was something we could wholeheartedly support -- living sustainably, distinguishing needs from wants, everybody pitching in with all aspects of the maintenance of the property. Tiny classes, challenging subjects. We took our son for a tour and he looked like he'd died and gone to heaven. We spent what we had reserved for college (and then some) on Midland School instead and it was worth every cent.

In one of our chats with the then-headmaster, a lovely man clad in jeans and wearing a flannel shirt that day, he said he'd last served at a school on the East Coast, very upper crust, and all the students were required to wear blazers to class. He said it was kind of a mind-bending change. We have some of those on the West Coast too, but as you can probably tell, we never would have considered them. We would not have fit in, really. We are the type of people who buy a Toyota new and drive it for 25 or so years.

12. One of my daughters

attended a boarding school. It was free, (Milton Hershey School), but she applied herself before telling us and it did her a world of good. She's currently a sophomore at Georgetown School of Foreign Service on a full ride.

They're just like any other school. No different. What are you doing, trying to start some class war? 60,000 tuition gets them nothing. They pay it because they love to spend money and it's their own business what they do with their hard earned cash and UR just jealous. Lots of nice people go there, too you know? Plenty of crappy people at the public school slums, too. My best friend/cousin/kid/I, myself Buffy went to one and he/she/I is/am a peach! Did I hit bingo yet?

...problem when in a diverse, pluralistic country like the US that so many of our government leaders are white, male and rich?

I know you would rather set up a straw man debate on whether 100% of rich people are bad or Republican. That is nice. But the point I am making, which I apologize if it is not coming through, is that our government and Democracy is harmed by the fact that so much power is being wielded by folks representing such a narrow perspective of America: white, rich and male.

11. FYI: I actually know a guy who attended GP at the same time as Kavanaugh and Judge.

He called them both "dicks" and bullies. He said they were definitely the top dogs at the school, but not everyone was like them. Certainly he was not when I met him in 1983.
