A man in France has been jailed and is the first to receive a fine for catcalling. The 31-year-old individual also slapped a womans bottom and made crude comments about her appearance.
A judge sentenced the man to three months behind bars and fined him a little over $350 on Tuesday for making lewd remarks about her breasts. The incident took place as the man, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, got on a bus in Draveil, Essonne, south of Paris. The bus driver got into an altercation with the man before locking the doors until police responded.
First conviction for sexual contempt! Well done to the bus driver for his quick reaction, and for the penalty imposed. Together we put an end to sexist and sexual violence, Secretary of Equality Marlene Schiappa tweeted following the judges decision.

(51,557 posts)I was hoping that was the guy this story was about, but it's not. That guy needs to go to jail too.
On edit, that cafe harasser was arrested. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2018/08/28/europe/paris-street-harassment-suspect-detained-intl/index.html
Hope the prosector charges him with assault and he gets jail time, along with a fine for the original catcall.

(205,394 posts)The guy in the story I posted is apparently the first under this new law that prohibits the "catcalls" alone. The first guy missed the new law by a week.
The attack came just over a week before France's National Assembly passed a new law banning sexual or sexist comments that are "degrading, humiliating, intimidating, hostile or offensive." Harassment in public could warrant hefty, on-the-spot fines ranging from 90 to 750 euros ($105 to $878).
