'People actually laughed at a president': At U.N. speech, Trump suffers the fate he always feared

By David Nakamura
September 25 at 5:14 PM

UNITED NATIONS — President Trump has long argued that the United States has been taken advantage of by other nations — a “laughing stock to the entire World,” he said on Twitter in 2014 — and his political rise was based on the premise that he had the strength and resolve to change that.

But at the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump got a comeuppance on the world’s biggest stage. Delivering a speech that aimed to establish U.S. “sovereignty” over the whims and needs of other nations, the president’s triumphant moment was marred in the first minute when he was met by laughter — at his expense.

The embarrassing exchange came when Trump boasted that his administration had accomplished more over two years than “almost any administration” in American history, eliciting audible guffaws in the cavernous chamber hall.

The president appeared startled. “Didn’t expect that reaction,” he said, “but that’s okay.”

Members of the audience chuckled again — perhaps this time in sympathy.

Trump continued his address, which lasted an additional 34 minutes, but the moment marked a pointed rejoinder from the international community to a president who has delighted in poking traditional U.S. allies and partners in the eye on trade, security alliances and general diplomatic bonhomie.

“He has always been obsessed that people are laughing at the president. From the mid-’80s, he’s said: ‘The world is laughing at us. They think we’re fools,’ ” said Thomas Wright, a Europe analyst at the Brookings Institution. “It’s never been true, but he’s said it about every president. It’s the first time I’m aware of that people actually laughed at a president. I think it is going to drive him absolutely crazy. It will play to every insecurity he has.”

Although it is not a "funny thing" (and I know you don't mean it as being one) - it is a horrifying event that truly does show what he said in 2014 - they're laughing at us.

NO - they are laughing at HIM!!!!!!

And YES, we DO need a truly great leader, a genius at strategy - like the one we had from 2009 to 2017 - PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA.

Opinion: Donald Trump's UN speech makes authoritarians great again

But while the truism that America is governed by Americans and the rejection of what he called globalism may win him points at a campaign rally in Kansas, it doesn't with the global leaders gathered in Manhattan. The same goes for his bragging, and factually inaccurate opening line that his administration had accomplished more than any other in US history. At the UN General Assembly it was rightfully met with a mixture of incredulous and embarrassed laughter. That was also the reaction of the German delegation after Trump called out Berlin by claiming that Germany would become completely dependent on Russian energy if it did not reverse course on a controversial gas pipeline.

Trump's boasting prompts laughter

Trump kicked off his speech with a list of his achievements since he took office in 2017. He went on to claim: “In less than two years, my administration accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country.”

As many in the audience erupted in laughter, Trump added, “So true,” with a smile before digressing from his script to note: “Didn’t expect that reaction,
but that’s OK.”

Of course, Fraud "didn't expect that reaction".. he's a fucking moron.

Trump is a laughing stock. But if we weren't laughing, we'd be crying

And while reporters and foreign policy experts could not recall another leader ever before drawing derisive laughter at a UN speech, it did not end there. When Trump made another claim – “Germany will become totally dependent on Russian energy …” – the cameras revealed the German delegation laughing and snickering to one another.

With Trump’s own behavior and policies as a backdrop, the substance of Trump’s speech merited laughter – it was an incomprehensible joke

Bratty little Donnie is used to braying at the other bratty bullies in his sandbox. When he gets on a stage where he can't pick (or pay) the members of the audience, they laugh at his stupidity.

The whole world is laughing at Donnie.
