we have two humans here... blah blah blah
NO... you don't Jeff.
One of them is a liar. Only one of them may be a serial rapist.
One of them now has corroborative witnesses and other people now making very similar charges.
YOU have to choose which you believe, which is credible.
If you choose to believe Kav... that makes his accusers into monsters of the worst order.
If you choose to believe Ford, then Kav is a liar, serial rapist, and monster who deserves to be in jail.
But you do NOT have "two humans" in front of you.

But we have a record on Kavanaugh. Evidence.

(30,613 posts)And who knows how many more secrets are waiting in his hidden White House records?
Why should we believe him when he says he's not a serial gang-rapist?

(6,703 posts)On one hand he hates Trump and would love to piss him off.
On the other hand he's a conservative and would love control of the Supreme Court for a generation.

(53,778 posts)He's just trying to set himself up for a future potus run by not alienating the repug base.
And will dutifully vote to confirm like the little, repug soldier he is.

(2,795 posts)To get him in line to vote yes. He can't be threatened too much since he's not running for re-election. So are they bribing him with something?

(16,179 posts)It was a call for kindness. And in opposition to Trump.
On edit: kavanaugh does not deserve kindness but like the Amish I believe in some level of kindness even when utterly undeserved.
The fact that he is still a pathological liar with no recriminations or admission of guilt...

(54,379 posts)My fear is still that he will live up to his name.
But Flake does not have the pressure on him to bend with the wind, as does Donnelly, Manchin or Heitkamp. He isn't running for re-election. He can vote his conscience with no fear of reprisal in the Senate.
The big caveat is that if you're going to vote your conscience, you first have to have one.

(46,166 posts)I thought like you, at first. But then he mentions two people coming out about Kavanaugh. But you know, he worded his statement so that it could be taken either way. Playing both sides to keep good faith with each doesn't cut it. I do feel for him and his family since they've received life threats.
I should find his statement and read the text.

(15,539 posts)He's trying to look like he's above the fray for whatever reason. Maybe future political aspirations. However, it was presented in the same vein as "both sides are doing it" just like Trump does. So, I wouldn't count on him.
He could surprise us and I hope he does. There is no way Kavanaugh is not guilty.

(3,051 posts)Flake's an opportunist, trying to play both sides of the fence. Always has been. Watch for him to vote "no" and run for the Democratic nomination.
I will note (just because I am a contrarian and an old lawyer), Kav is seeking the third way --- "she's not a liar; it sounds like something bad really happened to her. But she's confused; it wasn't me!" Sympathetic and lets senators have an easy way out.
They hit on this "don't know what happened; not me" theme early, and are sticking to it: hence the people she named as being at the party quickly saying (in varying degrees of strength) -- "I wasn't at a party where XYZ happened."
And hence his calendar, which, assuming it is not a complete fake (a large assumption), does leave only a few narrow windows for this to have been possible.
Her witnesses are not that great, in that they merely confirm she has told of her attack to them previously, and this is not a recent tale.
Anyway, he's creepy. Let's see who can persuade, as it will come to that.
