else more often than not throughout the history of the world. Hence the movement toward a more egalitarian system being referred to as "progressivism," implying that we'd be making some sort of cultural evolutionary progress by working toward a fairer and more sensible arrangement.

More generally speaking, I think our current politics resemble a goat rodeo.

The whole "red scare" thing. The Hollywood black list. Duck and cover drills in the schools. And the last gasps of Jim Crow at its most hideous.

Yeah, things have been really bad before.

I imagine in 19th century there was this level of disconnect between politicians and the general public, but certainly nothing post WWII compares to this.
