She was apparently leaning toward yes! It took what happened today with the 3rd accuser to give her even a little pause?? Evil! Evil!

But it was made clear to senators inside the meeting that the most recent allegation had resonated with the Maine moderate in a way that others up to that point had not.

(5,693 posts)What does she have to gain by voting yes and going against the majority of her constituents' wishes? I wonder if she was promised something in return for a yes vote.

(1,777 posts)...to take the hit and announce they won't vote for Kavanaugh. After the third accusation, they knew he had to be deep-sixed. Now Collins and Murkowski are being hauled in as the executioners.
In other words, -- let the two broads take the abuse from "the base." Cleaning up messes is what women are for.

(10,952 posts)Alaska is pretty dead set on a no vote. They will support her on a no vote. A yes vote and this will be her last term in office.

(12,586 posts)They travelled to D.C. to remind her of that.
Kavanaugh has come out against the Hawaiian natives, and by extension would rule the same way on the Alaskans once he's on the SCOTUS.
If she votes yes she may as well find a permanent home in Washington. They're not going to want her back in Alaska.

Trump has promised to appoint justices who'll make it illegal and repeated this happily, like announcing a promise kept, while speaking of Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing.

(48,955 posts)with this much specificity - and most importantly contemporaneous corroborations.
She can be weasely, but I think per fear of the demon-ization now common from the far right base - now extremely amplified by Trump's tweets and vocal attacks, are what keeps her - despite trying to give voice to moderation to her constituents - firmly in the GOP vote count.
My guess is that she may have been sympathetic - but weak - prior to the third accusation. More cover given in the third one - and perhaps a hope (for her) that someone else may also defect. Doesn't say anything good about her, per integrity. But might explain the different reaction.
