This alone should disqualify him from being a judge.

(10,271 posts)When he had 3 beers in him, he was among the most amazing human beings that has ever lived. But by the time the first 6 pack was finished....yeah, not so much
My sister figured out that u had to get over there on Saturday by 8am, and have an excuse to leave by 1 pm at the latest (cause that's when he usually finished the first and started on the second)
Best relationship advice I ever got heh.

(31,261 posts)I can believe that he is a nice guy when sober, but a monster when sloshed. My dad never raped anyone, but he went from a skilled, hardworking family man to a mean ass when he got liquored up, he is the reason why I don't touch alcohol, I have that potential in me somewhere.
Kavanaugh may be respectful when sober, but an assaulter when drunk. And it may be that he has NO recollection of what he did while drunk.

(16,829 posts)But his friend Mark Judge would probably have told him what he did, unless he suffers from the same problem.
And I think its highly unlikely he could go through a lifetime of drunken blackout belligerence without somebody telling him about his behavior. Its actually a wonder he hasn't been arrested.

(31,261 posts)Have you ever seen the child of a local big shot imprisoned. I grew up in the South (not insulting anyone), I lived other places in the country. I can tell you that the children of well known bigwigs got away with awful things when I was growing up. Another thing is that taking sexual assault seriously is fairly recent, during the 80's people got away with stuff because cops believed that women got themselves in the situations where they were taken advantage of. I actually worked with an engineer whose husband beat her, she didn't have him arrested, there was nothing that we could do, that was early 2000.

(75 posts)Thus, during his teen years, complaints against juveniles would have been referred by law enforcement to her office even if she did not work on them personally. Explains a lot to me. I wonder what activities on his part really triggered the 'community service' he claims in his bio, and whether it was a rich bad boy 'stay out of juvenile hall free' card, as was alleged to have been the case with George W. Bush in his younger wild years. I ask the question because there is nothing in his temperament that spells heart-felt concern or sacrificial volunteer service for the lowly and needy to me. There is a different standard of accountability and punishment for the wealthy, highly connected elite than for the rest of us.

(10,879 posts)OK, my family has very few alcoholics in it, so I have little to draw upon for experience. However, I see no reason at all why this clown has the wherewithal to be put on the highest court in the land for life. That would be nuts.
Just a reminder people- this is not a criminal court, but a job interview. How many of us would "win" that interview after a day like today?

(16,829 posts)He didn't make this claim, and I didn't make it for him. If he was so drunk he doesn't remember what he did, that would in no way exonerate him from the assault any more than if he killed someone while driving drunk and couldn't remember it. Heavy drinkers do have blackouts.

(10,271 posts)Yes I do as well. Child of an alcoholic here...and I had to teach myself to take and utilize the Good parts of my dad that I inherited, and activley reject the bad.
That you know that potential is there is a good thing, and being wary of it does u credit I think. But for me, I had to stop fearing it before I could harness it's strength and force it's energy to MY OWN Will and good intentions, if that makes sense ..

(31,261 posts)Over the years, I copied the good things about my dad, and avoided the drinking part. I think that I get my creativity mostly from my dad, also the ability to be patient and work through issues when I want to explode inside. My memories of him are firm, years after his death.

(10,271 posts)When it's hard, I recall into my physical being what that felt like, and I KNOW everything will be ok.
I did not greive for my father's passing as an adult...because his alcoholism forced me to do it as an adolocent. By the time he actually died, I possessed the maturity and sense of Self to know him (and reject his bullshit) as a Fellow Adult.
and I will be forever grateful for that expierence.

(507 posts)while testifying today? The alternating rage and tears made me wonder. Obviously he was not stumbling, slurring drunk, but a hardcore alcoholic can be drunk without being obvious about it physically.

(1,148 posts)My grandparents owned a tavern - we saw plenty of drunks growing up. They showed up in the morning as angry "dry" drunks.
The first thing I thought when I saw him on tv was, "well I'm already prejudiced against him because he has ruddy skin." And then when the drinking stuff came out I remembered why I am prejudiced against red-faced people.

(7,947 posts)And the over-the-top emotionalism... He's a smart guy, so he can argue, but his arguments were so repetitive and childish, and he didn't really seem to focus well.
But who would get drunk before a Senate hearing?
Maybe he's just nasty generally, and can hide it most of the time, but not under stress.

(2,067 posts)Not saying its not possible, but as an alcoholic who hasnt drank in 15 years, Im amazed at how many doctors and psychologists we apparently have on here who can diagnosis an alcoholic by their temperament on TV.
This keyboard psychologist and doctoring bullshit is what loses our site respect. Unless you are actually qualified to diagnosis someone, can we cut this shit out and focus on factual shit, like the guys horrible judicial record?

(224 posts)I agree many do have the background to know it when they see it. But I continue to recommend we push for professional expertise on his substance abuse problem. Easier factual and objective qualifiers than what is being pursued now. And note the phrase "substance abuse" is purty different from drunk. .... and real easy to prove.

(224 posts)Advising all who recognize these symptoms and behaviors to get some experts in this field to get past the politics and simply demonstrate everything that he did during his testimony is clear evidence of alcoholism and denial of same. Watch him closely, watch the water sips, etc.
May not get a valid FBI finding of sexual matters. From my view it is easy to prove his substance abuse problem been going on since high school.
Yes it should easily disqualify him.
