Here’s my take. You’re seeing a man with deep regrets and sadness about trying to rape a woman in a drunken stupor when he was 17. He was never honest with his wife or family about it so he can’t be honest with himself and us about it. That’s where the emotion is coming from.

IMHO this can be expanded upon to include all his other past sins he's kept suppressed down deep, in his festering self loathing, dark heart.

Fuck me, our whole Country needs therapy at this point !!
