I wanted to be a lawyer from my high school days. Being a lawyer is not just what I do, it's who I am. I served nearly thirty years in the Army between active and reserve duty as a judge advocate. In total, I have been a lawyer for thirty-five years. The idea that the law and the rule of law was basic to our society is core to my life philosophy.
I see today that the leadership of this country has no regard for the rule of law or the integrity of the courts. It seems likely the US Supreme Court is about to have a justice creditably accused of attempted rape - one who, it seems certain to me, has committed perjury - one who has declared war on the Democratic Party as a group.
If the rule of law and the integrity of the Courts is torn down, what's left for me? What assurance can I have that the courts are intended to dispense justice. How can I tell my clients that they should expect justice from the courts.
What do I do now?

(11,098 posts)Maybe a few days just being a small town lawyer tolling in the vineyard will get me over this.

So get in that Thunderbolt Greaseslapper & win one for Gertie! Yay!
Sorry but I have no serious answer but a big fan of your cartoons.
That's the first time I've smiled today.

(5,066 posts)of the case, the outcome(s) could and likely should go a certain way, but that given the trend of packing the courts with political appointees (who are more likely to be ideologically driven), the outcome may not be a positive one. Then I would explain the worst case scenario and explain why it should be given serious consideration before moving forward.
I know that this is a totally inadequate reply. But perhaps clients might be best served knowing what they are truly up against. The one thing I think they will know is that, despite increasing obstacles to obtaining justice, you will still give their cases all you've got.

(11,686 posts)We have had to many leave us already. Do not abandon us we need as many protectors as possible at this point in the game. It might not be a glorious job but it is appreciated by those of us who are not able to protect ourselves easily.

We're going to need all the specialized help we can get. Law only resembles English.

(11,686 posts)Our lawyers are also. My brother is a lawyer...well...now a judge and he may be a tax judge but he is not going to bow down to corporations trying to screw people over. We need professional help in all corners possible to fight against this vile administration.

(10,721 posts)What we have is a political party (one that has the White House, US House, US Senate, a majority of governorships and a majority of state legislative bodies) that is corrupt beyond words.
And the criminal justice system has been fraught with corruption and institutional bias for ages.
That said, you can play an important role by fighting for justice from within the system.

(10,829 posts)fight the good fight in the manner of Mueller and Rosenstein and Bharara, to name a few among many, men and women who stand shoulder-to-shoulder protecting the Rule of Law and the rights we've too long taken for granted.
As grim as things appear right now, the situation will turn. Yes, call me a bloody optimist but this fight is not over. It's just begun. We need good, solid people to lead us out of the wilderness. Don't give up. There are more people of goodwill in the country than the louts who would tear us down.
So, what do you do now? You fight like hell.
