General Discussion

Men like Brett Kavanaugh and the millions of other men who treat women as objects to be used and discarded at will. I apologize for not being able to keep them from behaving that way. I try, but I fail, again and again.
So, here's my hope: I hope that the women on this planet finally say "NO!" to such behavior. I hope they refuse to participate in what men tell them to do. I hope they all get together and become the new political majority. I hope they vote all of the men out of public office. I hope they move into those offices and make some sense of government.
Here's my promise: I'll do whatever I can to help women accomplish that.

(176 posts)Anywhere I can donate today (other than to Dems definitely voting no), or RAINN?

(176 posts)My congressman and senator (Joe Courtney and Chris Murphy, respectively) don't need as much campaign money from me this year (as much as they have needed in previous cycles anyways) - so hopefully I'll be able to donate more shortly.
Clarke Tucker seems like a really, really good candidate from what cursory information I've read on his site and Ballotpedia so far!
Josh Mahony is a Dem running in a district where the GOP ran essentially unopposed in '16 (he ran against a Green Party candidate and a Libertarian).

(11,343 posts)Both are stand-up citizens and would make excellent representatives. I've got my Mahony T-shirt (my district) and hope to get some signs for my county soon.

(176 posts)I've lucked out and have Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal as my senators (we had a couple of scares with Linda McMahon for a couple elections, but I can't even imagine having Tom Cotton as my senator).

(11,343 posts)I have resorted to begging in my emails to him and I get only a generic "I'm too busy" response.
The November elections could affect his reelection in 2020. If Josh and Clarke even make their races close, there's hope to have a strong candidate run against Cotton.
I'm talking to people in my rural area and I was myself assaulted and told to be quiet by the system meant to protect me...I persisted and literally had to go on trial myself. I am reminding Sen Cotton that women in his own district have to endure the same treatment, sometimes worse, by local officials. My story made local and state news and I was left disabled and without a career.
I will continue emailing and calling.

(176 posts)And what is no doubt being brought back up by seeing what is happening to Dr. Ford, Ms. Ramirez and Ms. Swatnick. I can't even imagine having done to me what was done to you - the rage inside would overwhelm me every second of every day.
I'm still hoping against hope that Collins/Murkowski will have moments of clarity, but it's not looking good.

(12,265 posts)Women know that there are good men who have our backs, it is the bad ones we fixate on especially now. Kavanaugh was a poster boy for what we have been dealing with for years. Angry, entitled man who hates women and has power over our lives. Keep doing what you are doing we all appreciate it.

Carry those registration forms around with you. Someone needs to be registered all the time. 15 million more voters are needed to win this election of our lives.

(29,718 posts)My real comment was to carry those forms with you. Someone on the elevator, grocery store line, gas station isn't registered and wants to be. Be a modern day hero, help them fill out the form (I tell them it takes less than 3 minutes) make sure they sign--most common disqualifying error and turn the form into the county clerks office. Get the forms at DMV or county clerk.

(32,641 posts)Teach your daughters to avoid these creeps. Teach your sons to NOT BE a creep!
Let them understand what this horrible behavior leads to, and how it affects the good people of this country.
It's up to us because nobody else cares.

Yes women should remain vigilant, but men need to be responsible for treating women correctly.

(29,718 posts)I read this in Tricycle Daily Dharma and I'm trying to understand the meaning.
To live is to let go, and in order to live fully we must learn to let go fully and to embrace the flow that is the universe.
I'm going to the garden to pull weeds and let the day absorb me and the earth calm me and having a tidy flower bed will give me a sense of accomplishment.
I look forward to reading your thoughts. Welcome Taraman

This may sound like bragging but I never had to force myself on women.
Any female that I had sexual interaction with it was with mutual attraction and concent.

(37,428 posts)I mean that the impulse is commendable, but it's just not significant. We can look to our own actions, apologize and make amends, but each man's soul's his own. We can and should try to talk each other out of being bullies and predators.
I think there's something fundamental in man that isn't fully compatible with civilization, and only in a highly civilized society are we forced to acknowledge it. Most of us suppress the worst impulses, but we don't fully empathize and don't do all we should, or much at all, to secure the freedoms of women and girls. Privilege is just too comfortable.
