He is protecting his future. The fact that it benefits the country is a good thing,
but not it does not make him a hero.

(22,913 posts)I believe he has a conscience, it's just that he doesn't often back it with actions. I'll count this as a positive contribution for now, in the face of strong opposition. But the final chapter on this saga has yet to be written.

(13,776 posts)He did the right thing, under tremendous pressure from those who were trying to keep him from doing it.
It's pretty rare these days for Republicans to do what's right rather than what's politically expedient. And his not running for re-election actually means that he's put his soon-to-be new career as a Republican influence (lobbyist, presidential candidate, RNC operative) at risk, making him even braver IMO.
