General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI work in a male-dominated occupation and was surprised today.
It's a pretty conservative work environment, generally.
Today I had a day full of meetings (ugh). But multiple men (several of them from other countries) were talking to each other and/or to me about the hearings yesterday. And every single one of them expressed that they believed Dr. Ford and found Kavanaugh and the Republican committee members disgusting, disgraceful, horrifying, etc.--before I said a word.
Every.
Single.
One.

(58,785 posts)We know now that millions across the nation, at home, 30K feet in the air, were googling "devil's triangle." (How on earth could he smirk and relax back as he told the senator it was like quarters -- did he forget others were watching?)
In any case, it really sounds like no one in your group, willfully or otherwise, misunderstood in the least his refusal to ask the FBI to clear his name. And even beyond all the various obvious perjuries, that's the big thing.

(1,603 posts)I work for a large aerospace company, which tends to be fairly conservative. I overheard two older engineers, one telling the other how awful he thought Kavanaugh was, and how disgraceful this whole sham was. The GOP did themselves no favors this week.

(34,456 posts)Kav ought to welcome it not only for the reasons many have cited, but surely he knows that it is going to be hard for the FBI to confirm a lot of facts that would suggest that he did everything he has been accused of, because of the passage of time, the fact that some people will not talk with the FBI, etc. And given that they have been limited as to time and scope, it is even less likely that all relevant facts will be confirmed.
So the odds are on his side even if he behaved very badly.
That tells me he knows damn well that he has done MANY bad things, not only those he has been accused of, but others--and that he has lied to the Senate committee.

What in the hell? was one remark I heard. The other remarks weren't remarks but simply a shaking of the heads...

(12,448 posts)That says it all. Men who do this literally don't see women as humans with feelings, or their feelings are irrelevant and unimportant compared to their wants.
Brett Kavanaugh could probably pass a lie detector test, because he doesn't see what he did as wrong.

(37,648 posts)as I grapple with the thought that most men really don't care, even if true. They don't care about women and how they have been assaulted or whatever...we don't matter. I never thought before that it could be true that men just don't care. But after the hearing, it began to dawn on me that yes, that may be true that they don't care. They know Dr. Ford is telling the truth. They just don't care.
So I'm so glad to hear that it's not true that most men don't care. I would care if he had done something to a male teenager or anyone else. So I struggled with how is it possible that they don't care about me or other women.
So thank you for that. Maybe the impression I've been getting lately is wrong.

(81,304 posts)last night. Yesterday was such a hard, dark, grueling day. I'll never forget that remark by former prosecutor Cynthia Alksne during the first break of the morning session when the coverage switched back to the anchor studio - "Half of America is crying." I was certainly one who did.
So I was stunned to see the tide turning. Grateful as hell, but still stunned.
I'm almost afraid to breathe.

(63,221 posts)I think there are a lot of men who also resent the rich, asshole, bully frat guy as well. Women weren't their only victims. They were douche-bags to pretty much anyone who wasn't their "type". Brett Kavanaugh comes across as an extremely unlikable, privileged, arrogant little piece of shit. I have no doubt that there are many men who instinctively dislike him as well.

(1,975 posts)I've been saying for ages that these assholes act like the stereotypical 80's movie douchebag. Think of Karate Kid, Better off Dead, One Crazy Summer, and Karate Kid.
It's like these movies was, art imitating life, of those out of control rich entitled assholes.
Kavanaugh showed what they grew up into the other day. When he testified, it was like watching my angry, asshole, mean dead drunk stepfather. The, boohoo that's not me excuses, and blows up if you dare challenge him.
I know all this rhetoric is all because we have been dealing with a live human survivor. I wont call Dr Ford a victim, because I dont think she is one anymore. My daughter and wife are both survivors. We owe her more than we know.

(31,392 posts)No, he doubles down by lying about it.
She's admitting that she believes Dr. Ford with her comment. And if she believes Dr. Ford, then Kavanaugh is lying. She thinks a liar is an appropriate person to put on the Supreme Court?
And no, plenty of men--even when they were teenagers--did not sexually assault women. It's not ok. Is that what she's teaching all those girls in her family. Just lie back and enjoy it, dear. They're entitled? And I guess if one of the neighborhood boys breaks in her to her house and rapes her, that's what she's going to say? Oh, ok, dear. Here have at it. Boys will be boys.

(221 posts)...you don't. Rape-enabling Stepfords need to be openly called out on it, ESPECIALLY since she has a LOT of female children that look up to her. Ask her, point blank, in front of witnesses, if one of her daughter or granddaughters was raped, if she'd be so content to say 'boys will be boys' and let it go at that?
The answer would be most illuminating. She might not change - evangelicals have an infinite tolerance for hypocracy and lies - but the witnesses might get an eye and earful that she's a monster that doesn't deserve to have contact with children of ANY age. Especially female children.
Call them out. Force them to fly their freak flag proudly.

I didn't expect to say much about the senate hearing until I heard one couple saying they believed "the woman this morning."
That freed me up. I told them about Kavanaugh at the end of the day saying he didn't watch her testimony prior to his. All three of us agreed that an innocent person would make sure to watch every second, to know what the heck she was claiming.

(3,728 posts)this reminds me a lot of the Access Hollywood tape, when the trump campaign tried to tell everyone this was just "locker room talk". Recall at the time lots of men spoke out in protest of that statement, many of them professional athletes and such. I'm male, and have been in more than my share of locker rooms over the years. Some crude talk sometimes? Yes. But nothing like the Access Hollywood tape. In fact if anyone were to say anything like trump said, there would be recoil from the rest of the men in the locker room, and a get the fuck away from me reaction.
This "boys will be boys" type defense, which Hatch promoted DURING THE SENATE HEARING (this happened in HIGH SCHOOL, he said), is the Access Hollywood locker room talk defense sequel.
