By Dan Desai Martin - September 28, 2018
More lies emerge about the family separation program that callously ripped apart immigrant families.
Contrary to the lies told by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, the Trump administration knew exactly what it was doing when it instituted its cruel policy of tearing families apart, leading to the abhorrent baby jails and other atrocities revealed over the summer of 2018.
A newly uncovered memo, signed in April, shows the Trump administration was fully aware of what its zero tolerance border policy would do to families. According to Buzzfeed:
Nielsen signed off on the option to prosecute all adults who crossed the border illegally, including those with kids, knowing it would lead to family separations. The administrations zero tolerance policy, which sought to prosecute every adult caught crossing the border illegally, resulted in thousands of families being separated, with some parents being deported without their children.
Even though the memo was signed in April, Nielsen blatantly lied about the policy both in conversations with reporters and on social media. On June 17, 2018, almost a month after signing the memo, Neilsen wrote, We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period.

(10,252 posts)too be so horrible and scarey that rumors of it would reach down to people contemplating immigration to the US and then decide not to risk it. But then all those kids in detention represents big revenue income to the keepers and sales receipts if placed out in adoptions. Always always with Republicans, follow the money.

(801 posts)Since she lied, throw her ass in jail until all of the families are reunited! That would motivate somebody! Maybe work down the list, the next in command goes to the slammer if we don't see adequate progress.

Show these vile people the same mercy they are showing the families they are tearing apart.

(36,128 posts)to see the scale of actual systematic spending, buildup and expansion of child "distribution" across the country. Border crossing drama was always a given, but not this.
Even locals say they weren't aware of what the government buildings were for, except to house "illegals," while most of America assumed policy about what to do with immigrant families was carried out directly at gateway points.
Only later, when Trump raised the "massive invasion" complaint, and a couple of camp escapees told their stories, did media took a closer look at what had actually been built beyond the crossings.
So we didn't actually know about the family program specifics at a national level, and that this has been some some institutionalized white supremacist evil.
Now we do.

(58,785 posts)took office, but leaks that this was being discussed started very shortly after and were reported in written media. Of course that was then immediately swept away by the 24/7 tsunami of new stories that has come to seem normal. Even WWIII would be old news by the end of a week.
In any case, I saw and posted it here in early 2017 but then didn't notice it again until they started separating families and it hit the front page so to speak. But it was out there.
Several months ago we got warning that detention camps that could ultimately hold up to a couple hundred thousand were being planned for a naval base in Texas, some followup coverage about the Navy's unwillingness to be involved in running or paying for that, but then mention of that mostly disappeared. At least I found nothing when I did a quick look a month or so ago.
But there have been lots of other stories of other facilities in various states. There's a "detention alley" in Texas, I think that's what that area's called now, because of all the new facilities that keep being added. Of necessity to hold the people they've grabbed, including likely many of those "legal until declared illegal" residents we've been hearing about.
Haven't looked for a while, though. Once again I along with most everyone else will be "surprised" into awareness when atrocities finally appear on TV and cable news.
COUNTDOWN TO CONTROL OF "TRUMP" BY A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS: 37 days!

(36,128 posts)and must be constantly monitored -- by whom, I don't know -- media, court ordered DOJ monitoring, local authorities -- for any renewed immigration abuses they might house.
This latest evil can continue with new players, whether Nielsen or her subordinates are penalized and jailed, or not.
I hope we at DU keep an eye on this arena of human rights violations, and spread the word to keep new events in the national news spotlight.

(58,785 posts)need not be refilled. Our courts have been doing the best job of protecting people and our democracy that laws as written allow, and that's been very good overall. They've halted and avoided a lot of tragedies and atrocities and will continue their functions, with implementation of ordered greatly facilitated by Democrats in office.
As best we can. PLEASE let us get majorities, if not control, of both houses of congress.
