How quickly we are conned into forgetting each atrocity.
How quickly we can be made to ignore yesterday's horrors because of today's new horrors.
Umm, you do remember that hundreds (thousands?) of children were kidnapped at the Mexican border, and that many are now in limbo? And that many may never see their parent or guardian ever again? And that this is one of the most horrible things that can happen to human beings and, by any standard, is a crime against humanity?
Okay, old news. Actually given today's Republican Party and their orange king, everything is "old news." Because every day, they commit a new outrage. And the result is that whatever they did yesterday is "old news."
But in the meantime, children are living in camps with horrible conditions. And many of their parents have been deported. Which means there are many children and parents who may fruitlessly spend their entire lives searching for each other.
Today, our focus is on the Kavanaugh prick. And no matter what comes out of any investigation, the Republicans will probably put this disgraceful, outrageous turd on the Supreme Court if they calculate that the electoral price to them won't be too high. -- That means too high for them. -- As for the rest of America? Fuck 'em.
But what about those kidnapped kids? They've fallen off the front pages of newspapers and the lead stories on TV. And if you're not in the headlines, you might as well not exist. You're just another "story of the day." So as far as the news is concerned it's a story for page 12 in a newspaper, or a brief mention in the last moment of some TV "news" program. Some kids, along with their parents or guardians, are just some "brown people" who were worth major coverage, sometime back when.
This is how a somewhat moral society falls apart. This is how it ends. A new outrage every day until everyone becomes numb.
The fascists know exactly what they're doing to us. And far too many of us are clueless.

(15,051 posts)I mean, really. How in the world did America fall into this rancid sewer?
I'm willing to take my share of the blame for not paying enough attention.
But I think that the entity that calls itself the Republican Party, and all of their allies that call themselves "think tanks" and "conservative societies," are the true planners, culprits and villains in the ongoing destruction of our freedoms.
It seems that they are acting masterfully at achieving their fascist goals, while most of us are clueless as to what they're doing and how to organize ourselves to stop them.
So now that many of us are becoming aware of what's going on, what are we going to do about it?
I mean really! What are we going to do about it?

What can you expect from a con-man, liar, sexual predator, draft dodging chicken shit, totally immoral lout and the people he choses who only seek his admiration.

My blood pressure boils every time I read or think about this. I want to send the Republican congress and administration to these camps immediately and indefinitely.

They really are major league dicks. -- And probably, far worse. The term "evil" comes to mind.

(6,556 posts)the tent city where they are now is very different.
"The tent city in Tornillo, on the other hand, is unregulated, except for guidelines created by the Department of Health and Human Services. For example, schooling is not required there, as it is in regular migrant children shelters."
The article at the link does a great job of showing what is happening. You can draw your own conclusions.

(58,785 posts)just not every hour every place. You obviously missed my own posts over the past few days.
But the real picture, the big one is that many people in our court systems, government organizations, NGOs, individuals and around this nation and others are working to get these children reunited with their families.
It's good that you posted, but I'd suggest that styling the court orders against these atrocities and the ongoing work to reunite families as failure is hardly a positive contribution. In fact, that people don't really care is an intensely Republican message. If their own depravity hadn't lead them to believe America wouldn't care, the Republicans wouldn't have done this, at least not in these numbers ahead of the midterms. They weren't always resigned to losing the house, you know.
Speaking of that last, tragedies under other programs are proceeding in smaller, less dramatic numbers, but the same people are busy fighting them.

(58,785 posts)there is just another way of insisting we're all failing as human beings. After all, it's not going to happen, Cyrano. And yet so much is really being done. These children's futures are a small part of the problem, though. Remember, if every newspaper and TV show featured those few hundred children in their headlines every day, the many, many thousands of others in trouble would still be in trouble.
Those people are being detained in facilities of various sizes and types all over the country. Some are legal residents being deported on new, manufactured excuses. And all over the country organizations are working to help them, most of them with the assistance of local volunteers. Thousands and thousands of people who haven't forgotten at all.
But unless we want the numbers of victims to grow into the hundreds of thousands as they work on deporting the millions being planned now, we'd damned well better stop this starting November 6 by giving Trump and his nazi types a real congress as their check.

(58,785 posts)to the polls in anything like the numbers who claim to care, we can overwhelm the stolen numbers, though. We lost the presidency to Trump by less than 80K votes, tragically nothing in a nation our size.
Speaking of, if you know someone who claims voting is a waste of time or not voting Democrat is a matter of principle,... Well, I don't know. I do know where the term "knock some sense into them" came from. Pure frustration in the face of intolerable hypocrisy.

Torture will follow. Killing of people trying to do the right thing and being good and kind to their fellow citizens will follow. The worst in our society will be given power, and the best will be suppressed, imprisoned, killed.
it's very close to happening.

But we're talking about people who have a only a vague concept of history and are probably incapable of grasping how they themselves will be viewed by future historians.
And that defines them. "History? Future? People's opinions? Fuck that shit. I'm in charge. I am in control. I run things. I. I. I. -- Me!"

(15,328 posts)And history in the sense of 50 years from now vs. 5,000 years from now?
In 50 years, societies are overthrown, millions are displaced/murdered. Some re-education and religious cleansing may happen.
In 5,000 years, traditions can be erased and transformed. Old tribal enmities can be changed and new enmities can be developed. Languages disappear and cultures are constructed.
The repuglicons only care about the 10-50 year view. They couldn't give a fuck if their POTUS or SCOTUS nominee was found to be a psychopath who was intentionally undermining a democratic system. Just give them their "deserved" ROI.

(15,551 posts)I mentioned this exact thing today on the thread about Melania and her trip to Africa and how hypocritical that it is being portrayed as her concern about children's wellness.
I have not forgotten. This is still the number one reason I want the GOP assholes gone and why the November elections are so crucial. However, I have no idea other than that what I can do on a daily/weekly basis to change this situation, one that should have never happened to start with. I'm hoping the Democrats in Congress are doing all they possibly can to help. Maybe in some way making sure Trump doesn't get Kavanaugh as a justice will mean he can't then let Trump off the hook when Mueller comes for him. Maybe then we can rid ourselves of Trump and his family. I really don't know.
What I do know is that there are probably many, many good ACLU lawyers and other lawyers out there who do care and are fighting the good fight for us. I worked at a law school and one of the older professors ran a pro bono legal clinic for immigrants. The amount of good work he did was incredible and he was able to get many of his cohorts to help too. Hopefully, there is a lot of that going on. Yeah, the media isn't focusing on that, but I have to have faith that they are doing their damndest to help.

(15,051 posts)We may win the House this year.
But 2020 will be the real test of their propaganda machine against our outrage.
They've spent decades creating a gigantic carnival midway for fools. And the fools bought the scam.
How do we go about fixing America?
The real answer is education, but the Republicans are trying to destroy, or make education unaffordable, from every level from kindergarten on.
By anyone's definition, people who are against education are barbarians. And that's what we're dealing with when we're talking about the Republican Party.
They are really a remnant from the dark ages. And they are currently enjoying a temporary success of a new age of barbarism.
IMO, trying to hold back progress and the future is an impossible task.
But the Republican Party is doing their best to degrade the human condition. Seems to me that they are doomed to failure. But, in the meantime, they sure as hell can make this a miserable place for the rest of us.
llmart
(15,551 posts)Education is the key. However, no matter how much they try to stop both education and progress, it will never work. It never has and never will. There were many who tried to keep African Americans from learning how to read and that failed, and they've tried to keep women out of positions of power and that has only moved forward in my lifetime. Yes, they can try to make this a miserable place for us, but we can't let them do that. In each of our own little worlds, we can find and make a place that isn't miserable. If that means ostracizing the people who want to add misery to our lives, then so be it. They are miserable human beings and their lives have got to be miserable too or else they all wouldn't look so damned ugly with rage all the time.
My country, what happened to thee?

Can anyone conceive that the environment set up to "care" for these children isn't a "pedophile's paradise?"
The stories that will come out, (and those that don't) will be the worst nightmare imaginable.
And those most responsible for this will be Donald Trump and Jeff Sessions.
Their enablers will be the entire Republican Party.
What will Americans do when these stories start coming out?
Worst of all, anyone with a brain knows it's taking place right at this very moment. And there's not one damn fucking thing we can do about the crimes being brought about by Trump and the criminal enterprise called the Republican Party.
Try to remember this moment if/when these swine are ever brought to justice. -- And I'm not just talking about the actual pedophiles. I'm talking about Donald Trump. I'm talking about every one of his abettors and enablers in the Republican Party.

(15,051 posts)But they're not extermination camps.
Yet.
I fear for these children given the monsters who hold the levers of power in our country.
Johnny2X2X
(19,107 posts)Trump and the monsters hes hired to imprison these kids would absolutely prefer extermination, the only thing stopping them is the press and the public knows about this. If they get better at keeping it secret they will start the ovens. And I am not being dramatic. It is just a matter of time before bodies start showing up.

(15,051 posts)For those who say "It can't happen here," wake up. We're well down that path.

(19,107 posts)History has shown that whenever a group is held in secret and the countrys leader has dehumanized then, atrocities occur. There are thousands of kids in prisons with little accounting for who they are and where they belong. It is probable that some have already been killed and has their bodies disposed of.
