Anyone remember the movie The Sting?

After Paul Newman shows a hand of 4 jacks, Robert Shaw is stunned that he lost. Shaw goes back in his train car compartment and his thug, who was supposed to be watching Newman's hand says, "Doyle, I know he had a different hand."

Shaw yells, "What was I supposed to do; accuse him of cheating better than me in front of the others?"

If Republicans are going to steal elections, 2000 (FL Harassment of minorities) , 2002, (GA Max Clelland), 2004, (Ohio), and 2016, maybe Democrats should stop playing by the rules.

when that movie came out. We showed it for months and a few of us used to try to take our break during the card game. I had a major crush on Paul Newman for years.

The Dems are split on this issue, whether you ask here on DU or you have Bill Maher discuss it with his liberal guests.

I vote for taking the gloves off. I am sick of playing nice. The GOP lies and cheats its way to scamming us from local to federal issues and elections. If we are to save our country, we'd better bring guns to a gunfight! McConnell breaks the rules 100% to benefit the GOP and destroy our democracy.

How could Gondorff be sure that the third player or Shaw, did not draw any jacks on the deal? The odds were not that low.

Things also get screwy for Shaw if the 3rd player does not fold and takes cards.

The only answer I can come up with is that he knew Shaw always cheated with the exact same hand with the same garbage hand to the player that he wanted to fold.

As for Democrats, we have proven that turnout beats cheating. That's our hand.

You have spotlighted one aspect. The one that always gets me is, "Place it on Lucky Dan."

That's the horse wager to test the capability of past posting the bookie joint.

Horse racing was massive in that era. The terminology was well known, far beyond today. But there is zero chance a wager of that size and significance would be treated so carelessly as to blurt it out in one phone called sentence without careful clarification. No way you merely assume the recipient would hear the word Place and instantly grasp the meaning -- bet the horse to finish second (or higher) -- especially when that recipient was not a regular in your group.

Then as now, Place and Show wagers were far less common and popular than Win wagers. I believe the Daily Double was newly instituted not long before the mid '30s time frame of The Sting.

My favorite movie.

Cheating of our own will accomplish nothing.

Our commercials are terrible. That's the only venue that seems logical, available and potentially devastating to define Republicans. As long as we have Chuck Schumer types ranting against Republicans in predictable mindless fashion, Trump will laugh and ignore, and rightfully so.

The tweets from liberal supporters are often clever. Some of the late night monologues and Saturday Night Live spoofs are clever and devastating. But they are wisps in the wind.

If we put together a series of commercials that used every type of device to define Republicans properly, those videos could become world famous and remembered decades if not centuries from now as the turning point in this era. They would have to combine irony, laughter, tears, anger, disgust, hope, contradiction, and so forth. Clips and quotes from current Republicans contrasted to great leaders of yesteryear. Endless possibilities.

Instead we allow Trump to mock Dr. Ford last night and he pays no price, other than one day's worth of articles and talk shows.
