they really can't win elections without cheating at this point (voter suppression, gerrymandering, election fraud, etc.), and given the inevitable demographic shift that's in process as far as the nation's population, even those things won't be enough to keep them in power much longer--so they want to entrench their ass-backward, wealth-serving political viewpoints in the judiciary, with its life-long appointments, to try to stem the tide. It won't work for long, relatively speaking, but it's going to be rough for the next 50-100 years, I think. If something dramatic doesn't happen in the meantime that makes all these considerations pointless and trivial (e.g. some kind of major eco-catastrophe, or an alien invasion or a zombie apocalypse or something...).
