I went to an opening Beto rally breakfast in Burnet Texas (which is 20 minutes away from the even smaller town I live in in central Texas) in August '17. It was right before Harvey, rainy and lots of people were worried about the coast and the pending hurricane. There were maybe 80 people there. Beto spoke about issues which impacts us all: health care, climate change, protecting women's rights, infrastructure, etc. He took all the questions even from the disgruntled Texas Dems and self-acknowledged Republicans. After the short speech and the q&a, he took selfies with anyone who wanted. He never personally attacked Cruz. He did however remind us all that the regular people of Texas never see or hear from Cruz. He talked about a person in a small town near Beaumont who said he had never seen a candidate in his town ever. Making the effort to go to all 254 counties and speak connects people and makes us feel empowered again. So star quality is a lovely media catch phrase but doing the on the ground work is what has made the difference here. P.S. There are 7,737,966,951,600 sq feet in the state of Texas and Beto has traveled a large percentage of that area.

(12,904 posts)And, while I agree that Beto has worked Texas like a champ, I would have to admit that he does have a star quality. Combine that with his other good qualities, vote Beto, and all of Texas benefits. The whole country is watching him.
Its a good thing.

(11,566 posts)The same goes for cult following comments. Its a way to discount and minimize Betos efforts and connection with Texans.

(1,765 posts)It seems the enthusiasm is still very strong. I was volunteering at one of the Beto HQ yesterday and while I was there 4 new people came in wanting to volunteer that have never done so before. Some signed up and 1 I put to work right away since they were starting a phonebank training. Another man came in and wanted to volunteer to open a new pop up office.
Then you have other stories like the husband and wife that came to get 2 signs since when the wife got home and saw her neighbor put up a Cruz sign she called her husband and said NO WAY we need to go get Beto signs NOW!

(14,726 posts)Seems the nation just cannot understand the smashed down desire for true representation that has been unleashed in this state. Gave out about 10 voters' registration forms these last 2 week. I asked every clerk at all the stores I went to. It was amazing how so many of them hadn't a clue about voting: have ever voted, only vote for president (even though they are not registered), say they don't care and it makes no difference, etc. I got all but one unregistered person to take one. What happens after that, who knows.

(145,243 posts)I was a regular delegate and he was super delegate. I next met Beto at an event at a bar in early 2017 and loved him. I have been to three Beto events not counting the State Democratic Party Convention. I think that he is great and is the real deal.
I strongly agree with the OP. Beto is the real deal in my opinion
