I think the Dems should form a group (if there isn't one) of young politicians like Swalwell, Beto, Kennedy etc and athletes, rappers, singers (there is a difference ), young entrepreneurs, designers, tech execs etc to promote videos like this. The culture of not voting has to be changed.
I realize this is not a genius moment on my part since this to me is a no brainer. This movement to change that culture should've started YEARS ago.

(220 posts)Or, as Rachel Maddow might say, "Watch this space".
I have a friend/neighbor who is producing a video for distribution to schools and colleges called "The Blind Date". It's a 10-15 minute short relating the story of a young woman and the how not voting impacts her life in a very negative way. It is a disturbing video, but must viewing for young people who need a prompt to get off their backsides and vote. And, what WILL happen if they don't.
calimary
(81,267 posts)Do you have a link for that video? I'd like to take a look. ANYTHING that will motivate them to get off their asses and give a damn about this, is a good thing.

(708 posts)Young people who don't vote suck. I've heard all kinds of stupid excuses from conspiracy theories that it's all fixed to apathetic whining that both parties are the same.
calimary
(81,267 posts)THAT last one you mentioned is what REALLY galls me.
HOW on God's somewhat-green Earth does someone actually believe that both parties are the same? HOW? I need help with that one! Because I. Just. Do. NOT. See. It.
Good Grief! You'd think by now that nonsense would have been dispelled.

Second, THIS senior did NOT vote for Trump.
Third, everyone needs to remember that it's their kids or grandkids who will eventually select the nursing home they'll be consigned to.
I understand the point of this ad, but I'm not at all charmed by it.

(24,653 posts)Perhaps because I have voted in every election since I turned 18, same for my 21 year old. And my son who turns 18 in 4 days is super excited he is finally eligible to vote.
That being said, I am aware of the stats on the youth vote. Just not wild about this approach. To each his own. If it convinces someone to vote without turning someone else away, good on them.

(27,812 posts)The people in the ad aren't Boomers, anyway. They're from the so-called Greatest Generation.
Pitting generations against each other is not helpful, and by the way, the people in my family who are pre-Boomer are ALL very, very liberal and vote that way.
violetpastille
(1,483 posts)Ended in 1924.
You may be thinking of the Silent Generation.
LisaM
(27,812 posts)Like I said, I don't like generational pitting. And I don't agree with all the monikers anyway. It seems to me that the changes in the last century have been by decades, not generations. The Boomers are supposedly 1946-1964, but you find a vast sea change within that group (and the later ones all think of themselves as Gen Xers - I have a friend whose husband was born in 1964 and she's just frantic that he might be considered a boomer, since she blames them for EVERYTHING).
It's a zero-sum game, if you ask me. Every generation has its strengths, its hopes, and its weaknesses. I don't like this ad, actually.
calimary
(81,267 posts)Frankly, I don't care who it's aimed at, as long as it WORKS. This baby boomer believes that if it helps us get the results we want, then that's all that matters.
Fred Sanders
(23,946 posts)Even a fraction more folks under the age of the actors in the ad would tip the scales...half the electorate do not vote historically in mid-terms, across all divides but the elderly...they vote.
violetpastille
(1,483 posts)I'll say this, I don't think it's going to cause anyone *not* to vote to would have otherwise.
*Non-Voting Millennials* have their own distinct user preferences that are not being targeted in this ad. I'm having a hard time even locating a strong Trump-hate vein on them. They have their own motivators.

(10,173 posts)Also there a lot of millennial assholes who like Trump, mainly white dudes.
But I think the ad is powerful ..if only to remind us that the future is in our hands. We have a responsibility to be engaged.

(1,483 posts)I'm not a Millenial. Nor a Baby Boomer.
But when I have spoken to Millennials about not voting, they seemed to think of voting as something as sacred as Mormon virginity. They wouldn't just "give it away" to a candidate that didn't fit their unique user preferences.
I'd appeal to their vanity.
"You're the sexiest. most well educated most ironic generation in history. Program America to fit YOUR preferences. Go Online and register to vote. Get an "I Vote. You're WELCOME!" sticker and have the government YOU want when YOU want it."
Don't have Grandma scold them. That didn't work. It won't work. "Blah blah, wrinkles, Blah Blah!"
Instead, lots of happy colors, fast edits and oleaginous flattery.
There has to be a follow up commercial about "Lesser of Two Evils" appealing to their irony. "Carbs or Gulag?" "Oh. Carbs."
"Bleeding Gums or Sharks with Light Sabers?" "Bleeding gums..I guess?"

OhNo-Really
(3,985 posts)it's insulting to millenials.
Imho there has been a decades old, sometimes not so subtle, propaganda message trying to pit young people against the boomers.
This ad plays right into that propaganda message.
There are so many better approaches. An example off the top of my head
Families walking in the park with hepafilters glued to their faces. The future millenials are facing if environmentally responsible politicians are not electd NOW
Fred Sanders
(23,946 posts)OhNo-Really
(3,985 posts)Now, if we had handed millenials a clean environment, kept greed from ruling, no student debt traps, not spent fortunes on the MIC, and provided National Health Care for All, the add would have merit....
We didn't. We can apologize for this. There is plenty of blame to spread around.
Implore millenials with an admission and admonition to join us in the fight for the health and well-being of the whole planet. Let's avoid heading towards extinction.
We handed the reins to the GOP in thenClinton mid-term and again in 2010 by NOT voting. Had we done the above, the ad could say
"We worked our buts off to provide you with great opportunities blah blah blah, don't drop the ball we are handing you. VOTE"
What is true is the only way out of this mess is EVERYONE VOTING in every election forever.
violetpastille
(1,483 posts)Perhaps an ad something like this essay https://www.theroot.com/why-is-it-so-damn-hard-to-vote-1829531499
Acknowledging that it is hard to vote, there is a learning curve. That young people have their own problems visited upon them.
And ending with the message. "Piss Them Off, Vote Anyway."
(I'm thinking the hell with ads though. Bots worked a treat for Trump. And they are going a lot cheaper than ad time. Go where the people are, right?)

I'd prefer a more positive approach. Talk about the issues that concern young people the most. Devote some time to it. Not that a campaign has to be totally focused on young people- we should try to appeal to every generation.

(638 posts)There's nothing that anyone could say or do to convince a lot of stupid indifferent apathetic young people to vote. Speaking as a 27 year old, they just don't care unless it has a meme connected to it.
Sometimes I think all the polls about young people being pretty leftist is just a self selection of young people who are engaged thus depressing the actual more conservative numbers. Essentially, don't count on us young people to save the world. As Obama would say we are the one's we've been waiting for. Maybe some people will actually listen this time...

(15,540 posts)As has already been said on this thread, the people in this ad are not baby boomers. Also, it's ageism to the nth degree.
I'm a boomer and until I retired a few months ago, I worked with millenials and I could see many similarities in our generations. So many of them are busy with their lives and what free time they have they have some fun. Maybe they don't have the time to live politics 24/7. Though I've voted in every election since I was 21, I bypassed local elections because they didn't really seem to have much to do with my life in my 20's.
One of the things I remember about myself so vividly is that I kept telling myself not to have selective memory when I got older. To remember what it was like to be young and full of life and have your whole future ahead of you. The term "generation gap" was coined during my youth because we felt the WWII generation didn't understand our stances on war. They gave us the impression that sex was dirty and sinful.
Historically, young people have never been a large segment of voters. I don't think this ad is helping much and will probably not reach them anyway.

(2,596 posts)I'm on the younger side of that age group, but I can certainly agree with the inherent truth in that ad. I'm not offended by it as some might be because I don't think like that because I'm a progressive Democrat, but I've known a passel of people exactly like these ad characters. The only difference is they don't voice these sentiments, but they damn well think them.

(63,221 posts)They need to be shown how it directly relates to them. Wages, job opportunities, housing, health care, birth control, personal freedom, penalties for minor drug infractions, etc.
A lot of young people don't see how what goes on in Washington affects their little worlds. The ads need to be personal, emotional and impactful.
