to appropriate a form of protest directed to another serious problem in this country suffered by a minority.

the pledge or the national anthem for far longer than football players have been taking a knee?
That refusal to participate can take many forms (including taking a knee, remaining sitting, walking out, or standing but refusing to vocally participate.)
Personally, I have not participated in either for at least 5 decades - so if there's appropriation going on . . .
