For good of country, Grassley should oppose Kavanaugh, resign as chair

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/opinion/columnists/iowa-view/2018/10/03/good-country-grassley-should-oppose-kavanaugh-resign-chair/1514008002/?from=new-cookie

The entire country has watched as Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, makes his way through the nomination process. At the center of it all is Iowa’s own senator, Chuck Grassley, in his powerful position as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Grassley is more responsible than any senator for upholding the constitutional obligation of the Senate to provide “advice and consent” on judicial nominees, which traditionally has meant a thorough investigation of each nominee, as free from partisan politics as possible. Unfortunately, Grassley has abused his power, ignored his constitutional responsibilities, all so he can inject partisan politics into the highest court in the land. Sen. Grassley has failed, and it’s time for a change.

Grassley’s failed leadership has been on full display during the Kavanaugh hearings, but it didn’t start there. In May, Grassley publicly pressured Justice Kennedy to retire, because he wanted to replace him with a Justice that would be more conservative. That kind of political gamesmanship should be as far from our courts as possible, but Grassley wants politics to be center stage in the judiciary.

Once Dr. Christine Blasey Ford came forward with her allegations, Grassley dropped any pretense of feigned bipartisanship during this nomination process. He bullied Dr. Ford prior to her testimony, presenting her with arbitrary deadlines and threatening to deny her the opportunity to speak. Grassley and his staff knew about her allegation prior to it being made public, and instead of investigating, they helped Kavanaugh prepare a defense. And until his hand was forced, Grassley even opposed an independent investigation by the FBI into the new allegations. He chose instead to let his own highly political and partisan staff run their own so-called investigation, one of whom tweeted that they were "unfazed" and "determined" to confirm Kavanaugh. This week, Grassley has turned his focus to asking for notes from Dr. Ford’s therapy sessions, instead of digging into the background of the nominee. Does that sound like a senator, or a staff, who will run an investigation free from politics?
