Verizon is outsourcing its IT to Infosys, an Indian multinational company. It will be getting rid of thousands of workers. It wants to cut $10 Billion in costs. It is offering early severance packages to those who will take them.

How's that for "making America great again"?

(25,862 posts)Companies keep on discovering that outsourcing is not always the best thing to do. The new employees are from a different culture. Their English skills may be lacking. They won't have worked on whatever the project or program is, nor will anyone around them have any experience. They'll make mistakes. Customers will be alienated. It's the tight focus on the bottom line that is so wrong.

(3,728 posts)there was this IT outsourcing craze in the early/mid 2000s. It went over just like you described and really fizzled out. Surprised they are doing this.

(8,904 posts)we outsourced some engineering to Mumbai.
First problem, they had to work ET to interface with our engineers and no buses ran to get them to work at that time of day
Second, if they could get to work, their offices were in a bad part of town not safe to travel in at those hours.
They provided competent engineers but it was a failure

Fuck American jobs even though they were making huge profits.
It's never enough. Hope the deplorables who lost their jobs blame it on the repugs. They can't blame Hillary or Obama now after two years of trump.
And where is their hero riding to the rescue to save their jobs like he did the Carrier Jobs?

(35,443 posts)The move satisfies the shareholders if only temporarily which mean that management gets bigger bonuses. If things go to shit, just hire someone else to fix it.

Details are very limited to the masses, but I would anticipate this move is in keeping with that goal
Gonna be a bumpy ride .

(31,828 posts)It's all "management". I bolted in January from the Wireless side after 12 years.
IT is a teensy tiny portion of this RIF.
And it IS a RIF wrapped up in a "3 weeks for every year" buy out.
The sad thing is - you have people who started out in the stores or in Customer Service 20 years ago and VZW is all they know. My worked prepped me for newer (big data) technology. My experience prior to working there gave me a strong feel for pre IPO street fighting technology. So I kind of never really "fit in" with the culture. IE slow to change too much time in analysis paralysis.
An Administrative Assistant is considered Management.
An Analyst in Marketing, Ops, Finance is considered Management.
They started turning Call Center Positions into work from home agents in Q4 2017.
Folks - the writing is on the wall.
The party is over.
And it's not Hans who triggered my wake up call. It was when the CFO of wireless was pushed out in 2016.
THAT guy told us the truth. They didn't want to hear the truth.
Veritas (Verizon) my ass.
What sucks for IT is those folks who held on for 10, 15, 20 years literally just lost their years of service. They were "rebadged" and aren't eligible to opt in for the layoff/RIF.
Party is over.

I love my employer now. What a breath of fresh air. Even with all of the challenges for manufacturers - my head spins at the difference in how we work WITH each other, the level of respect, the growth, the conscious decision making, 15 year plans, etc. etc.
They spend so much time on Powerpoints and schmaltzy bullshit that no one is really going to the mattresses for the customers.

(37,648 posts)So sad. That's a LOT of jobs lost. Yeah...those who are offered an early package need to take it. The first ones out would be in the best position to find a new job, I should think.
You were savvy & bold to catch the hint and move out, when the gettin' was good. That's a hard thing to do.
Why would an IT guy with 15 years of service not be eligible for the early severance package/RIF? You mean they weren't sent the letter offer?
That's a LOT of jobs. Sheesh. I feel so sorry for them. Esp if they are 50 years old or older...so close to retirement. They are in their biggest saving-for-retirement years, not to mention the wages on which future Social Security benefits will be based. Lives will be ruined. Horrible.
JustAnotherGen
(31,828 posts)Explained that because they went to the Outsource company and are new employees there - even if they work in Warrren, Basking Ridge, etc. etc.
They aren't eligible. They did this in August I think? They gave them new badges -they weren't allowed to even have the option to opt in.
That's terribly unfair.
And if you put in and are denied . . . what happens then?
Now they will 'block you' in growth and maybe you will be the first to go.
Folks are feeling like after this RIF? One week for each year or maybe only 2 weeks salary.

(31,828 posts)I think the Tariffs are going to kill manufacturing in the US very quickly for those who export outside of the US.
At my company - no one will lose a job. But to meet our orders for rest of world we've GOT to increase manufacturing. We are going to expand the small factory in NL that we have. It's better/easier for our European deliveries - and there are no oppressive tariffs on Chassis wrapped up in a non existent *smdh* national security threat.
So much nonsense in America. So much nonsense. I do worry about my 'Verizon Family'. I'm so worried about them.

I remember getting calls from Carolyn at 2am saying, "There's a problem in production, Shaygan wants you on a call."
Then getting cussed out, "A bunch of indian teenagers could do better.."
Well, apparently someone listened.
I got tired of RIFs every 6 months, and wondering if your name was on 'the list', and who'd fight to keep you; afraid to take vacation time because the person who filled in for you might have your job when you get back...

(37,648 posts)But I don't think the capital cost is that great, at this point. It's not as expensive as laying cable. They need the towers, but they all bought towers and leased them last year or two. However, the towers may need updating.
But they don't need all the workers to repair and lay cable, anymore, I would guess. And the managers for them. And just cutting staff because of outsourcing.
This will ruin lives. I have read that a certain % of people laid off end up dying soon after.
