by JULIÁN AGUILAR, The Texas Tribune Thursday, October 4th 2018
EL PASO Former President Barack Obama has endorsed 11 Texas Democrats leading up to next months midterm elections. But none go by the popular four-letter moniker Beto.
On Thursday, the three-term Democratic congressman looking to unseat incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, had a simple response to being left off the list: Were doing fine on our own.
I dont think were interested [in an endorsement], Beto ORourke said after a town hall at a local high school. I am so grateful to him for his service, hes going to go down as one of the greatest presidents. And yet, this [election] is on Texas.
-snip-
ORourke said his campaign didnt reach out to the Obama camp for an endorsement and added that hes been down this road before. When he ran what was considered his underdog 2012 campaign to defeat former U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, the incumbent received nods from Obama and former president Bill Clinton.
It didnt work then, ORourke said.
Bill Clinton fills up the county coliseum and a screaming El Paso Times front page headline [said] "President urges El Paso to stick with Reyes, he said. And we won. And what that drove home for me is that someone elses popularity is not transferrable to a given candidate.

(50,955 posts)1. What's with these articles that are taking statements out of context and making them
seem like fights between Democrats?
It's a lot of bullshit.

and neither is complaining about.
Makes it sound like there is a quarrel when in fact its just political chess.

I don't think that Obama is terribly popular down in Texas, and his endorsement might drive more Republicans to the polls than Democrats.

. . .and in Texas, that counts for a whole lot more.

Could have also been the headline.

(19,178 posts)8. If Dems didn't run away from Obama
And defended the recovery act and Obamacare they wouldnt have lost Congress.
Learn from that. But if this guy is doing good against Cruz without the endorsement, its probably best BO stays out of it.
