October 5, 2018 at 8:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard
McConnell is heading into the day that could clinch one of, if not the, cornerstone achievements of his career tilting the courts makeup firmly to the conservative side and he doesnt currently have the votes. He and his top deputies are optimistic, no question. But its not there yet.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) agreed, according to Reuters: As of now I dont really know and I dont know if anybody else does.

(595 posts)The way I see it Kav is a near lock and I do not see him withdrawing whatsoever....

(92,219 posts)inevitable, his confirmation. At most I see maybe one republican voting no
I suspect grassley is pushing this to rally the sexists, bigots, and racists.

(171,070 posts)loathed because he's unfit for the SC. Witness the protests, editorials, etc, that have become very public. I don't understand why they'd want to drag this on.

(92,219 posts)this is for pure propaganda purposes.
If they didn't have the votes, they wouldn't hold the vote
an then when the "close" vote confirms they will loudly declare how "good over came evil"
That is just my cynical take though
The only thing that can stop these abuses is the midterms

(12,344 posts)Flake and Collins would have announced a yes vote. That they didn't means they didn't tell McConnell either, which suggests a no.

(1,004 posts)His daughter is getting married and he's going to the wedding, regardless of if there is a vote scheduled. He's made that crystal clear. They just have to wait for him to get back.
It does, however, mean that someone is a private no vote. My guess is Murkowski. It also means that Manchin is a private no vote. Just need one more. If Flake and Collins have already played their hands, then time to look to Sasse or someone else.

(7,869 posts)I think if any of the Republicans are going to defect, it will be Murkowski.
I believe other prominent politicians from her state -- their governor and lieutenant governor, maybe? -- have already come out against Kavanaugh's nomination.
