General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsGood morning. I need a little computer advice.
I need a little help.
My HP desktop computer will be 2 years old next February.
I have had no problems with it or with Windows 10.
Problem starting last week;
While using the computer I get a notice that the device I have plugged
in has not been recognized.
I haven't plugged anything in.
It just pops up at random.
After the notice my keyboard or mouse dies.
It deepens on which port they are plugged in as to which one dies.
All of my USB ports are working.
I tested them with my speakers.
My keyboard works.
My mouse works.
It temporarily shuts off a USB port.
It can take days before I can get it to come on again.
I get a notice saying my device has been recognized.
Several minutes or hours later, I get a notice saying the device is not recognized.
Anyone have any suggestions ???
I am completely illiterate when it comes to computers.
Please be gently.
Thanks in advance.

(29,205 posts)I'm seen similar "malicious" viruses show up recently (turning off USB ports, corrupting keyboard entries, etc).
I use Malwarebytes...but even it did not remove one of these viruses from a customer. I had to have them purchase spyhunter ($40 for 6 month subscription).
Not recommending you do that... download the free version of malwarebytes and/or spybot and run them and see if your problem clears up.

(10,252 posts)The motherboard on my HP finally burned out. A professional fixit shop can determine if malware sneaked into your computer, of if its a firmware problem. Your computer fix it shop may loan or rent you a laptop, while your system is in the shop. I use the free version of malwarebytes to check for viruses. Run a virus check BEFORE you take the machine into a shop.

(13,108 posts)I tried what is in the YouTube video.
Everything has been working for 40 minutes.
Fingers crossed.
I hope it is fixed.

(36,865 posts)Given the amount of views for these videos, it appears to be a somewhat common problem.
Good luck!

(7,244 posts)there'd be no harm in cleaning the contacts on both the USB plugs and sockets.
A combination of a careful squirt of switch/contact cleaner, perhaps followed up by a blast with compressed air, also working the plug in and out of the socket a few times, might help.

I keep my two computers and Mr. Shraby's going.

(31,261 posts)You could have a bad board, a loose wire in it or a virus. A competent shop should be able to figure it out and save you money.

If not check your Devices
Look for the yellow tag next to any device.
Uninstall any such device.
